Jones Act Violator?

Was searching around on the site marinetraffic.com and I notice that the Cosco Philippines left Long Beach and is headed to Oakland…how is that possible? It says it is Hong Kong flagged…WTF?

As long as they don’t load cargo in Long Beach for discharge in Oakland there is no violation at all.

They start and end their journey at an overseas port. Calm down, take your medicine and call your congressperson. They will immediately put u on hold and blow u off.

They can go from one port to another, they just can’t take cargo from one to the other. If they load containers in China they can unload some in Long Beach and then unload others in Oakland. They are violating the Jones act if they load cargo in one US port then discharge that same cargo in another US port.

@c.captain: ah, ok…I thought a foreign flag ship couldn’t go from US port to US port PERIOD…

That’s not to say that they can’t load cargo in one US port then go to another US port and discharge cargo, as long as what they discharge came from a foreign country and not the other US port.

Most box ships in foreign trade make 4-5 port calls in the states. They discharge cargo and load cargo in each port but as others have said, they are only limited from moving cargo for discharge between us ports. Tankers do the same thing.

Multiple container ships do a west coast or east coast swing. They don’t violate the Jones Act by doing so. On the East Coast they do go to Freeport & move boxes around & bring them back stateside.
