Quick! Use the search function on the forum before the gCaptain mafia come for you! We all help each other out here on the forum as best we can but God helps those who help themselves, and we take that VERY MUCH to heart here on gCaptain. Be prepared to be publicly chewed out for not doing your homework before coming to ask for help!
If you’re actually interested in working in the maritime industry, which based on your question it seems like you are, then take this as good preparation for the real world. If you go to your superiors, either officers, a bosun, or your AB’s, and you ask questions that you could have very easily answered for yourself by doing a little research, or even just stopping to think for a minute, then you will very quickly find a permanent place on the bottom of the totem pole aboard your vessel.
We know you’re new to all of this, so good for you for reaching out and asking for help, but learn this lesson now and learn it well: do the leg-work yourself before you burden others with your problems. The United States Merchant Marine is a brotherhood and we are ALWAYS here to back each other up. Sometimes it can be a love/hate relationship but at the end of the day we never refuse to offer a helping hand. Having said that though, you can bet you’ll get an ear full if we don’t think you’ve done the necessary due-dilligence BEFORE asking for help.
I hope you find what you’re looking for by making a foray into the merchant marine, but if this is the path that you choose then never forget to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps first!
