Job Prospects for an Academy Graduate in the Gulf
Nope. Why would I ask several questions about the Maritime Industry if I already “know it all”?

Just a brief search through the forums uncovers several “kaaaadets” (its two “a’s”, actually) that have a burning desire to work as a cruzzze captain or with NOAA because OIL IS EVUL!!!111!!
In saying this, you imply that the academy kids hate oil and would never want to work there. Straight up wrong. Most people I know want to work either in the offshore industry or on tug and barge. The few that want to work in other sectors want to do so for their own specific reasons. More like, “I’ve always wanted to work on a cruise ship, sure it pays way less but its better than just pushing around a barge” not “OHMYGAWDD I HATE THE OIL COMPANIES SAVE OUR OCEANS” I’m sure alot of us are divided on how the whole energy industry is handled from a regulatory and policy perspective, but jobs is jobs. The activist types are at liberal arts schools getting useless degrees and probably vote for the green party. Just so you know you will encounter more environmentalists if you major in marine environmental science. People in that kind of major usually have a unique appreciation for environmental conservation.

I was only applying that several potential cadets on these forums share that view of “Big Oil”. I hyper linked an example. This was an example of my tone being a bit confusing.

I understand that. The implication came off however that you believe many of them feel that way.

Any admin or mods, feel free to banish this thread to a very remote and undesirable place (delete it)

You come across as a “smart ass” because you just keep arguing with everyone. Just take the good with the bad and stop responding with these huge walls of text. Also just use the search function i believe there have been MANY threads that you can get this information from. My condolences to you if you ever end up down here with that attitude.

In short to become a DPO you (Get a job with a company that has DP boats)> (take DP basic) > (seatime) > (DP Simulator) > (work hard and not be a little bitch) > (DP cert)

My condolences to you if you ever end up down here with that attitude.

Agreed, that it is pretty hard to decipher a persons real attitude or personality.

Being this is the Internet, it’s also nigh on impossible to get direct feedback on how you come across and are perceived.

Trying to be helpful here, and not insulting, but the backlash to your posts would indicate you are coming across as a dick.

Guys…

You’ve all been “Had”

This thread was not written by a high school junior. I have never met a 16 year old who writes like this. This is the internet and you never know who you’re really talking too.

I’d put money on this being a parent trying to get some industry insight and use that to help guide their son.

All I’m suggesting is don’t get too wound up trying to straighten this kid out because it’s not a kid. It’s an adult with pre-formed opinions looking for validation.

I just looked at this thread and was amazed at the amount of smoke blowing out his ass.

I am agreeing with this…there is something to this person which smacks of their not being legitimate. Why pick fights here? What’s to be gained?

SouthernBornOhioBurned is a troll.

The disturbing part of threads like this is it perpetuates the image of the cocky young FNG who needs to be set straight as soon as he gets his first assignment.

Don’t need threads like this encouraging real mariners to make my shipboard internships any harder.

Yeah I gave in last night once I saw some other posts by this person on other threads. I started hearing the sounds of a Minn Kota in the room.

I am still waiting for any examples of me being a “smart ass” or cocky during this entire thread . Other than my incorrect perception about most freshman cadets and their aspirations of becoming blue-water captains–and this perception is largely to blame on the numerous threads on here. But its always easier just to say someone is a smart ass than to actually provide proof that they are.

Boy, ah said boy, you just arent getting it.

Nobody needs to or is going to give you any examples. The feedback you are getting ought to tell you that maybe just MAYBE you are going about this the wrong way.
Good luck to you.

This may be a bit late, considering how this thread went, but how would a new Engineer fare compared to a new 3rd Mate? I have read quite a few times on here that there are in very high demand, but not much about average starting pay per day/salary.

I wouldnt think that a Marine Engineering degree would be as math intensive as a Chemical or Petroleum Eng. degree.

Unless you plan to go straight to an office think about where you want to work instead of the degree. Would you prefer an air conditioned wheelhouse or a 500° engine room? Seriously, think about which job you would prefer and let that guide your choice of degree.

Unbelievable…

Hey Jon - Several - even the original poster has requested this thread be zapped.

How 'bout it?

Jon - Please…put this thread out of it’s misery…

Man, did I show up late to this party or what!! Its not a Junior in HS, no way. But if you are, I hope one day I meet you on my drillship.

My internet went down as I was posting this:

I think its appropriate that I say what I have told others in PMs to everybody here. I apologize if I came across as condescending or later on as argumentative. It was never my intention. I included the bit about “being a freshman cadet that would actually love to work in the GoM/offshore” so that maybe I could prevent the typical “you dont know shit, greenhorn”. Well, that backfired.
