First - lose the persona.
Second - Delete your account. Your screen name is toast and you wont get many more helpful replies anyway.
Third - Re-register with a different screen name. Re-introduce youself as who you really are. (My guess is that you are a concerned Dad with a career as a gov’t contractor who is trying to help his son decide on a direction after HS.)
Forth - Ask straight questions without injecting opinion. You might be surprised how helpful this gang of crusty mariners can be if they believe you are on the level.
Will A&M let you do something like Ocean Engineering while also getting an unlimited ticket, either deck or engine? A guy I went to high school with did Ocean Engineering and is now very high up with a deep see mooring company.

Please dont tell me I sound like a government contractor. That really is THE WORST insult.
My entire family is comprised of defense contractors and I cant stand their reluctance to give up even a little of federal funding. So much waste, and that includes the service academies.
So, you hate your family because they are defense contactors?
Maybe you should grow out your dreadlocks and go do a sit-in with the Occupy Wall Street protesters.
Peace, love and tie dye, mannnnn!

I never said I hate them, nor do I “hate” govt contractors in general. But that doesnt excuse most of them for being a parasite in a suit. You’re grasping for straws with this one.
My comment in its entirety was about Kings Point and the other dinosaur Service Academies. I used the defense contractor example to show my disgust with those that choose to suck on the Federal Government’s udder.

I honestly expected better from “professional” mariner forum. You know, like maturity, knowledge…you know, professionalism!..Ha.
Nah, this is a fraternity-like-gathering-for-internet-hazing comprised of self-professed “professional mariners”.* Also, you insinuating, pompous, internet tough guys, there is three “there(s)” in the English language: there (place) they’re (they are) and their (possessive). This forum is riddled with grammatical and spelling atrocities. I’m surprised you’re able to get through the ITT Tech web filter, just to get to this site… to play tough-talking sea captain.
It was admitted earlier in this thread that only occasionally “a new member is thrown a bone” and is actually given advice.
Now this is a troll product. Doesn’t this site deserve a good, pet troll, though?
And the stupidity continues to spew from him. He wants to sit there and try to insult us, the guys who already work in the industry, and then wonder “derrrr, I don’t know why everyone thinks I’m being such a smart ass.” It’s clear he’s not half as smart as he thinks he is and I can’t wait to hear the stories when (if) he gets into the industry. That’s a sure fire way to get left on the dock as the boat pulls out.
Just shut up and move on. You have your answers… The industry is booming, for now. Your GPA, sports teams, clubs and degree don’t count for anything out here, just the license. There’s your answers, now go concentrate on something like maybe getting into an academy.

Thank you. Thats all I needed from post #1 til now.
This guy needs to learn how to approach people. There’s a shit ton of knowledge and advantageous contacts to be made on these forums and you’ve seemingly thrown that in the trash bin.
Well played moron. Nobody was hazing you, you simply radiate a “I’m coming straight out of school and sailing mate or better” attitude.
Seen and heard it before. I’m a hawsepiper and I have to bust my ass (currently) after 6 years of decking on tugs, still haven’t obtained my license. (My own fault admittedly, but $ is tight for a single income family)
Grab a fuckin paint brush kid.
Hey mariners I am, 17 and I know what you think, young and hopeless but I am, in the mist of trying to get into KP, Any guidance or advice. What’s the life like out there in the REAL WORLD! What’s the job of a 3rd mate and how do the promotions go ?
