I may be exposing myself to a sharp end of a pointy stick but WTF is the deal with Japs & whales? What’s the economic incentive? Is blubber in that much demand at sushi bars?
I’m not defending the tactics of Sea Shepard but why doesn’t Japan just leave these criiters alone and go back to decimating the blue fin tuna fishery?
Its a cultural and traditional thing. Japan is a homogenous society without any significant immigration. So its strictly a Japanese culture where age old traditions remain strong. Its not a melting pot full of immigrants like the US that assimilates other cultures, and allows other cultures to supplant Japanese traditions. Mass media and the internet seem to be changing that somewhat.
To some extent, this also an economic and jobs issue for the whaling towns in Japan. Like many things in Japan, the whaling industry is heavily subsidized by wasteful government. spending.
That said, eating whale meat is a bizarre anachronistic fetish. Whales are protected under international law, and the Japanese should to respect that law in international waters. Instead, they have chosen to be outlaws.
If the Japanese government can be outlaws, and nothing is done about, its not a surprise that people like Watson feel that they can be outlaws too and nothing will be done about it.
A lot of money in exotic perfumes, make up, and such.
I realize there was some bumping going on but that was some good ship handling by the Nisshin Maru. The way they split the the Bob Barker away from the fuel ship was pretty amazing. All they need now is Hideki Matsui up on the bow to bat some concussion grenades at the sheeps!

Death’s head on their logo and they are not treated as terrorists? Unbelievable. Of course the lunacy of their manuevering is only exceeded by tossing explosives onto the deck of a fuel tanker. . . . . Whether the Japanese are right or wrong in their whaling is far outweighed by the illegal actions of the Sea Shepherds. I guess it will take the sinking of a real ship and multiple human deaths before anyone takes any real action. . .

Yep, and if it’s a Sea Sheperd boat or crew that gets sunk or killed, they will become a martyr for the cause and much $$$ will flow in to support the mission.
I remember reading that Greenpeace (Rainbow Warrier?) was sunk at the dock in NZ killing a crewman. The perp was later found to be a French commando team using underwater explosives. It was a PR and financial coup for GP.
If it’s a Jap vessel or crew that gets hurt…I suspect there will be an investigation but sanctions? Charges? Dunno
Don’t forget that Watson jumped bail in Germany. He is wanted in Costa Rica on charges relating to injuring fishermen there and the Germans had grabbed him. They screwed up granting him bail.
thats not what is generally classified as a deaths head. It is just a skull and crossbones. This is the totenkopf, or deaths head, people normally think of when you say that term

You know that it isn’t just the Japanese decimating the Blue Fin but the entire world. It just so happens that the Japs are willing to pay real gold for those fish and people are greedy so kill them in numbers that cannot be sustained. Soon the Blue Fin will be extinct as far as any fishery is concerned and if sportsfishers continue to take them like they do, then they will become truly extinct.
