Alaska will share in $1 billion for “essential” ferry service for rural areas over the next few years. There is also $342 million set aside nationally for ferry terminal improvements and a $250-million pilot program for low-emitting or electric ferries.

They need to figure out how to operate without excessive subsidies, otherwise they’ll just continue operating unsustainably until they pull the rug out from under remote communities.

There’s a reason it’s called the Marine HIGHWAY System. Nobody asks the road from Fairbanks to Anchorage to turn a profit, so why should the road from Juneau to Haines?
