Is rail transport threatening shipping?:

Rail traffic is essential, but can never replace the volume moved by a nice ship.

Looks like the China - Europe rail is doing a roaring trade due to Covid-19:

Earlier this week, ambassador Wim Geerts witnessed the launch of the first freight train from Nanjing, Jiangsu province, to Tilburg, North Brabant:

Bug, there is a reason Warren Buffet has railroads in his portfolio.

trucks beat rail in 99% of cases although not that environmentally efficient
The rail handling at each end is the issue, I guess if the train going over 1000miles it should beat the truck.
When driving in Italy the volume of trucks is just huge on the main eastwest and north south routes. ( rail tracks are alongside these roadsā€¦)

Donā€™t worry, no rail link across the Pacific. Any virus will die while waiting for berth in LB/LA.
