Deckies do a good job on the bridge. I stay out of their stuff unless they are breaking equipment by running it incorrectly. ( I watched a bos’n once put the hydraulic detent to full stroke and start the winch motor. His ass was 10 lbs lighter after I chewed him out then explained to the knucklehead that a motor likes to start at no load if it is possible.) Another time a tanker I was working on sailed with almost no ballast because the port we discharged in was all raw sewage and the captain did not want shit in his ballast tanks.( I agreed with him at that time BUT) He demanded we run full speed as per the charter agreement. I explained the main turbine condenser was only half full of water and we would loose the main vacuum if we sped up and stop our engines. He was afraid of what the office might say (BP). Our speed was 15 knots and our charter was 13 knots as we had the current behind us leaving Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The chief asked the pussy captain So, Whats the problem? Once we ballasted down we gave the sissy everything we had, as usual. That captain eventually became a port captain.
incompetent engineers that trick deckies and office ppl into thinking they’re the sh*t
has anyone else seen this?
I apologize in advance to any of the engineers that do do this.I guess it has been working for you or else you wouldn’t be doing it.
but still, the BSers out there have really been pissing me the F* off
and the deckies and office people just eat it up. It makes me want to vomit[/QUOT
I assume you are not a captain. Most of the captains I have sailed with for the last 20+ years have an interest and knowledge of engine room operations. I’m not saying they will fix inoperable equipment, but they know what to expect if certain equipment fails and time involved for repairs. This is all information that will be relayed to shoreside personel, usually the captain or the mate. It would serve you well to get the chip off your shoulder and learn some of this engineering terminology. Do you find alot of engineers trying to “trick” you? Do you think deep down you may be suffering from engineer envy? Just a thought.

I never said ALL engineers are incompetent. I have worked with MANY competent engineers. Working with competency makes you recognize INcompetency immediately.
Being an engineer is more than just memorizing a routine and being an operator, and that’s what many of the engineers in some of these companies are. Some, not all. -
I never said that deckies are stupid. I told them not to let engineers act like they are so much smarter and know so much more. Yes, engineers have to know a wider array of things, but the type of knowledge of the two jobs is not comparable. Two different subjects, two different sets of tests.
-
I never said office people where stupid either. I said that they don’t know what really goes on. If I am an American and I visit China every once in a while, yea I might come back and tell people
I have been to China and know all about what life is like there from the point of view of the couple people I talked to. But I have never actually LIVED in China, on a day to day basis and experienced the culture and ever day happenings. I might have learned a few little words of Chinese and made a few observations but that is not the same thing as living there, and really understanding the customs, rules, written, unspoken etc and what does on in daily life and how they deal with things -
No, I am not a ‘yachtie’. Yachties get paid for what they look like, and their career has a shelf life. I get paid for a skill that I will be able to do well into my 40’s.
-
Also, don’t assume that I walk into a boat with an ‘US’ vs ‘Them’ attitute. I don’t do that. Well, unless they start first. I have come to the conclusion that many men correlate their
engineering skills with their masculinity and it bothers them to see a woman (especially not a butch) doing what previously made them feel like hot shots. This is not all, its some. And just like you said I need to let things go, they need to let things go too. I am an anolomly, so one freak of nature shouldnt be enough to make a man feel totally devalued as a man, but somehow it does. I walk onto a boat normal but I will say something about if if I am disrespected, just as you would if someone disrespected you. -
The monkey thing does occur sometimes, and that can being annoying too, but thats not what this was about in this case.
7)===>> This post wasnt about me, and had nothing to do with me being a woman. I feel like one of those women who used to sneak aboard ships and pretend to be a man and got expsed for what I am. Its like you are never gonna forget it. Yes, one time I posted about a women’s issue, but that’s not what this post was about. This is a professional post about engineering issues that go on on the water and I would be writing the original posting about the same thing weather I where a man, woman, or other. This was about what bothers me about what goes on, and people being deceived. BUT, I don’t have the energy or the will really to continue on with it. I guess you could say I’ve changed my mind. As the bible says ‘… do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces’. I think I would like to let people live in the nice little world that they live in, unless they specifically want to know, which in this case I think they don’t.

Actually, your first post was kind of incoherent. You throw around a lot of generalities and you just revived a post that had been dead for more than 2 weeks so you could have the “last say”.
By the way… what job is one that you will only be able to do through your 40’s… does it involve a pole? Seriously… there are engineers and “deckies” working into their 60’s and beyond.
actually, unlike some I have a life that doesnt evolve around the gCaptain website, maybe this was my first time logging in since my last post. And its none of your business what I do
You ought to stop posting to this thread.
You made some unfortunate remarks in your opening post months ago that did not cast you in very good light. Most people had forgotten about it with the passage of time, but then you revived the thread and reminded everyone about your unwise remarks. Now you are keeping the thread alive and pounding it in.
As I said to someone else the other day, remember “The First Law of Holes.” “When you find yourself in a hole, for Christ’s sake, STOP digging it deeper.”
LOL you are obviously one of those types that I was referring to. And I am most certainly NOT in a hole. YOU my friend are in a hole because the oil prices have dropped quite low and there is no guarantee that they will come back up. Being a woman and a kick ass engineer too is actually quite an advantage in other industries. So when shit hits the fan, don’t expect to come knocking on MY door, in my neck of the woods and have much luck with employment.

Second Law of Holes - Don’t be one.
Second Law of Holes - Don’t be one.
Exactly. Obviously, at least some of the academy kids are getting a good education.
I can’t believe how many mariners in this forum are taking jabs at oilfield Mariners now that our industry is facing tough times. It is sad to see people that know and understand. How hard it is to sacrifice time with your family to provide a living can be happy about the idea that others could lose their jobs or take pay cuts.

Well no one cared about me not being able to find work when I couldn’t even afford to pay my cell phone bill. Tell your family to get a job, that’s what I had to do when my family ran into rough times.

Really? That’s the best you’ve got?
That’s right up there with a soul crushing “Oh Yeah?..”
You should never enter a battle of wits unarmed.

Yeah… it’s a little sad. But consider this source. “no guaranty that prices will go back up”… yeah… and no guaranty that they will stay down… or not go back up either… Markets are fluid and change all the time… sometimes for what seem to be completely weird reasons too. Whatever “skill” she has apparently evaporates in her 40’s…(by her own admission) so I’m not so sure most of the guys on here would be “qualified” to do what she is for a living.
I hazard a guess that many of the bigger osv companies have contracts out in the future for their work. Some producers are the same their production is sold into the future market at set pricing scenarios… not everyone is “guaranteed” to take a bath here. I do see it as a great excuse for some outfits to cut pay and weed out the less than stellar workers. I’m sure there will be some people that will leave the industry and go back to others… but, I think most of the the good, better and best mariners will keep their jobs even if they may have to take a little bit of a haircut in pay/days working. Shoot, some people are still getting hired in the Gulf. Also, with fuel prices going down… that is also a “help” to the industry in some ways because when they work it costs less to operate… fuels a pretty good sized chunk of change for an OSV.
Save for a rainy day and don’t load yourself up with payments that match your maximum earning potential… but that’s good advice for anyone in any industry.
Anyway, here’s to hoping things are just in a temporary lull…
and trying to degrade me based on assumptions about my personal life which you know nothing about is also very original.
None of what you’ve said so far makes sense.
Update:
Actually I agree about deckies not idolizing engineers. I don’t think we really do that so idk where you’re getting this all from. I think us deckies are pretty smart too. Maybe you should talk about specific instances.
You have left us no choice but to draw our own conclusions. You don’t want to say what you do… apparently it’s not something people who are older than their 40’s can do. You have come across as someone with a chip on their shoulder in some part because you think that “men” are out to get you in some way… and that a lot of the problems you face are because you are a “girl”.
Based on the way you have posted and responded here, I doubt the fact that you are female has much to do with the problems you encounter.
You really can’t have it both ways… you can’t come on her and crap all over other people or their profession and then expect people to ignore what you do or to not challenge your “logic”. You throw about generalizations then get pissed when people question them…or provide other possible reasons for what you think you are seeing. You have maligned both Deck and Engine departments and seem to have pretty much no respect for anyone. I can’t imagine why you have problems at work… shocked in fact.
LOL WOW you sure do have a way for twisting things. Well all I can say about my insults to you and your cohorts are dont play with fire if you dont want to get burned and please refer to my posting on page 4
