These are among the findings of a new report from the World Economic Forum and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) report, which argues that the 180+ dual fuel vessels on order by carriers are not seen as a clear enough demand signal by fuel producers, necessitating long-term offtake agreements to justify FIDs.

Scaling up the market requires a fundamental shift in how fuel contracts for shipping are done, the authors of the study urge, calling for a move away from short-term spot market based contracts towards long-term offtake agreements.

EU Innovation Fund is key to support the transition to zero-emission waterborne transport

The Innovation Fund uses revenues generated by the EU Emissions Trading System to invest in Europe’s green transition. 20 Million EU Emission Trading System (ETS) allowances have been earmarked under the new EU ETS Directive for the maritime sector. These allowances correspond to 1.5 to 2 billion EUR under the current carbon price. Although waterborne transport projects were already eligible, the most recent call for proposals in the framework of the EU Innovation Fund includes specificities of the sector, taking into account the fact that maritime transport contributes to the EU ETS from 1 January 2024 onwards. The Innovation Fund focuses on highly innovative technologies and flagship projects within Europe that can achieve significant emission reductions. The aim is sharing the risk with project promoters and putting the spotlight on highly innovative projects with clear European added value.

GAMMA project to make international shipping climate-neutral

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has set a goal for the maritime sector to reduce the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions to around net-zero by 2050. The five-year GAMMA project will contribute to this, say representatives from the start-up company Aurelia, which specialises in the concept design of climate-friendly vessels.

Increasing regulatory pressure to decarbonise, including stricter targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) last July, means the shipping industry now needs to achieve a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by or around 2050. To meet the anticipated demand of 17m tonnes of oil equivalent annually by 2030, the maritime sector needs to access a 30-40% of the projected worldwide carbon-neutral fuel supply, according to a report by DNV.
