MEPC 80 will be held in London 3-7 July 2023. It is expected to adopt the revised IMO Strategy for Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships:

Several nations are making proposals to be discussed at themeeting, among them USA:

Biniaz argued that the long-term goal of the current IMO greenhouse gas strategy – which includes reducing total annual greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 – is insufficiently ambitious. The US has proposed the inclusion of a more ambitious goal – specifically, zero emissions from international shipping no later than 2050 – in the revised strategy.

Will this also affect US domestic shipping (incl. ships serving Hawaii, Alaska and PR from CONUS ports)?

What I’d like to see come out of next month’s MEPC meeting - Splash247

My recommendation would be for IMO member states to agree a net zero target by 2050, and to impose a tax of $100 per ton of CO2 emitted starting on January 1 next year, increasing to $200 by January 1 2030.

I’d also like to see the IMO set a deadline for 20 years or older ships to be scrapped by January 1, 2035,
