This thread has taken an interesting turn & Holland really must be awesome depending on your definition of awesome. It doesn’t get anymore “First World Problem” than having an emotional deficiency that needs to be remedied by hugging cows, horses, goats or dogs. Many people on the globe would be happy to hug these animals too except they would only do it long enough to have someone else slice open the carotid artery to bleed out the animal for butchering. IMO, having the need to hug these animals does show something is missing elsewhere in the psyche but it sure beats malnutrition so Holland definitely wins. Nothing against those who do but I’m happy I’m not in an emotional state where I need to volunteer or pay someone to hug their farm animals.

Don’t get me wrong, Holland is still awesome with its cow hugging but I prefer the American way of lighting the burdens given to us by our cruel reality. Lots of drugs, alcohol, overeating & easily prescribed pharmaceuticals!
You forgot about; and blame it on somebody else.
We should not place too much value on a couple of hundred, probably even less, of cow huggers and then typecast an entire population to that image. It is no more then a wellness exercise for a happy few of which there are many kinds. I see it as the result of a welfare society who is past financial worries and are looking for new thrills and experiences. Result of boredom perhaps?
It’s like hugging trees, most people struggling to survive and feed their families don’t have the time for it.
I got to give it to the animal huggers in Holland for not taking it as far as these dudes in Pennsylvania.
In some countries that sort of stuff isn’t even illegal. 
Probably to some but I think it’s part of a growing mindset that people are stuck in city apartments and disconnected from life and want to experience something other than concrete pavement and traffic. Bestiality, zoöphilia and animal porn is punishable in this country since March 10, 2010. Perhaps rather late but that is because this phenomenon was hardly known until then. It is hard to catch the perpetrators as the act is often committed in a closed environment like a home or a barn.
At present, there are still a number of countries where zoöphilia is legal, including Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Finland, Hungary, and Romania. In the US, there is no federal law against zoöphilia although most states class it as a felony and / or wrongdoing, even though it is technically legal in some states (e.g., Texas, Kentucky, Nevada, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Wyoming , West Virginia and New Mexico).

Sadly it’s been well known for a long time. Every now and again the news hits with a piece about mutilated horses and supposedly nobody knows who did it. With DNA analysis available these days, I find it very lazy of authorities anywhere to not find the perpetrators of such violence. It’s a well established fact that those who harm animals harm people too. What else have these orcs been getting away with?
Also, perhaps not Holland, but other countries, have a weird way of writing laws. I seem to recall one example in Germany where bestiality and homosexuality were tied up in one bundle. So when homosexuality was decriminalized, so was bestiality, in 1969. I think bestiality was finally made illegal in 2012…
There are also here a number of sick minds running around who like to mutilate animals like this horse after being tied to a fence first. Bloody shame.
Aska, an Icelandic horse, was put out of her suffering on Monday by the vet in Wolvega. The night before, the animal was so severely abused and raped in a meadow on the Beetsterweg near Beetsterzwaag that treatment was no longer possible.
France was hit really bad with this type of crime this whole year.
