Hiring freeze?

So I was offered a job with an OSV company, sent in my paperwork for a background check and went in for my physical on 6/06. Because of some responses on my medical background the doctor needed some additional info from my primary care physician. Here’s where it gets sticky, the doctor was out of the country until yesterday so I couldn’t get my physical completed until today 06/18. Now the company says the positions have all been filled and there is a ‘hiring freeze’ in effect. I can understand the jobs are filled but a hiring freeze? I was offered the job and was VERY close to giving my current employer notice. Is this a common thing to occur?

If this particular company is building vessels they may be hiring to replace crews that moved to new vessels. If that isn’t the case maybe they have vessels deployed overseas crewed with locals. They hire crews as needed when the vessels are ready to be mobilized back the states.

Kind of quiet, now?

That’s what happens when you have a snag in your paperwork. Just being a day late is often the difference between a job and… waiting until the next one opens up. Maybe they will put your app on the top of the pile for the next opening. Good luck.

Not only that, but they sold 2 boats and the rumor is a 3rd will be gone in 2 weeks. Those crews need new homes as well.

Try back in August, that is the word on the dock, …Don’t Worry Be Happy

Just out of curiosity, and not to say this was the case necessarily, but if a company issues a written job offer and you accept, are they not obligated to accommodate you regardless?

seems to be the bayou way

not if is a Louisiana company

Never seen a written job offer. It’s always go see if you pass the physical. You aren’t an official employee until after orientation is over.

Short answer…no

Until you’ve filled out the W4, you ain’t got a job

I’d say that until you are standing on the deck of a vessel and the master was advised of your arrival, you haven’t been “hired”

Sorry, been away from the screen a couple of days. Yes I do have a written job offer(email) and have been told I would stay on the ‘top of the stack’ for when something opened up. My question was mostly this ‘hiring freeze’ rumor. I spent 108 days straight on a boat this winter/spring. I finally get off and apply elsewhere and all the great hiring stories I read about on this forum are drying up? Just my luck.

I’m sure there’s something in there about you passing your physical, I know that was a condition of my job offer. But that’s the advantage the GOM companies have. They needed someone now, you had a problem so they just went to the next guy. The hiring has slowed but is by no means over!

I failed a physical in April, had surgery, and was hired the minute I was cleared by the doctor by a BAYOU company. I also had two other offers from non-GOM companies I turned down while recuperating because the personnel guy gave me his word. Call me naive but I still go by a man’s word. The day a man’s word does not work where I work, I am out of there.

Same goes if I violate my word and now I am in a better situation than where I was. Go figure…

Rodger that, You can say anything you want about me, but don’t ever say I didn’t keep my word

hello, all, first time/long time. glad to be a part of gcaptain at long last.

i came to this thread with the hopes that i may receive some advice from those of you who have had similar experiences. i am currently working in the commercial fishing industry, as i have for 13 years, for a major player in the bering trawler fleet… and with prices and seasonal work trending the way they are, it’s time for a change.

trouble is, very few on this forum seem to have had good experiences with contacting any of the major gulf/OSV companies (EC, etc)… and due to my location i’m unable to travel to the gulf right away. i hear that this is the only way to get a hold of some of these people - and i hope i could get some advice from some of you before making such a big commitment.

i’m currently a QMED oiler w/ endorsements for stcw/engine watchstanding, and i want out of the fish. i have extensive sea time and experience, and i want to bring my skills to the gulf.

realistically, what do you believe is the best way to contact these gulf companies? anyone know of openings w/ companies that are inclined to respond to email? (email has not worked to date- discouraging). thank you for any response… it’d be more than i’ve heard from any HR department thus far.

Will at Seacor is the only person to ever respond to my email past my application. Laverne at Chouest will send you an application, but doubtful you will hear back from her.

I was working with a company that I have placed several Captains with and did have a hiring freeze around that time. I also had a guy who was about to go to work, and took his time getting onboard, due to no fault of his own. Still…gotta strike while the iron is hot. It’s all about the bottom line, and that can always cause a hiring freeze, especially for bigger companies.
