Hello! Another Guy Looking for a job!

33 Apps since the 13th. So I’m assuming about 55-65 total…I’ve got brainfry. I’ve done so many I can’t keep up with who I’ve applied to without digging thru my paperwork pile. Now I need to make a call list and every morning. Starting at 8am I need to work down it. Who knew looking for a job could become a job.

I think what’s killing me is the lack of current boatwork. Been applying for Deckhand “entry level” jobs that require 6 months boat time…lol.

It’s a catch 22 type problem. I kinda wish I’d taken the +3k I spent on “school” and papers used it to go down and go “door to door” to search for a job. After securing one, had the company foot the bill for all the training.

In my mind I figured,( not really knowing any better) That if I had the licenses, ID’s and training it would so much easier to secure employment. Not so it appears, it appears that work history is much more important than any papers from the USCG.

I also think that living in MI dosen’t help. We have a house in Alabama and I’m thinking I should have used that address instead of using my current location.

Think it was Ingram that I applied to on their website they state that only prople living in certin states were eligibile for employment “due to USCG travel Regs” ??

Just frustrating cause I know damm well I can do the work and excel at it.

On July 12th we’re headed down south to take my granddaughter back home to the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Going to map out a route and go door to door. I’ll prob only have 2-3 days max. Anybody have a suggestion of what location is the best to start? Do I need to make many copies of my docs -MMC,Twic etc and hand them out at each stop?

Advice needed.

Thanks

Oh, i should not post when cranky… i was on a rip.

Applied to Trident - Freighter work. (Sea Trader) If I get it, it’s a start.
Got a bite today, hopefully I can set the hook! 2nd question they asked was is your bag packed… :~) I feel like X-mas is tomm and I’m 12…lol
What ever happened? Was this with a lakes company?

Grand River… they had a situation “devloping” but they worked it out. I think they had a cranky employee, that decided to stay. ;~( Ahh hell, I’ll find something just have to keep kicking over rocks.

I’m prob going to have to “lower the bar” and go after some of the jobs that are not as good. Any job is better than NO job. If I don’t get something soon, I’m going to get one of the local manafacturing/assembly line jobs and then continue to look in my off time.

I was in the same boat you are in now. 1600t Masters oceans, MTV AGT, 20+ yrs exp. Changed career for wife, license expiration beyond grace. Oh yeah now 56.

So I changed wives and got back in gear. Took me a year and a half just to get a job. Now that I have my sh!t together again I have 3 different offers to decide on.

It may take awhile sailing as deck hand as I did but it is all worth it in the end. Besides the wages are way better than before.

Calm seas and fair winds bro

Yep Joe

A good woman will make ya, a bad one will break ya. I have a wonderful one now and want to spoil her, she deserves it.

Thanks for the positive outlook. Must be nice to have 3 offers! Good job.

By now it should be very clear to you why you do not have a job ! There is only one reason: You are not knocking on doors in the oil patch.

It is almost a complete waste of time to send emails, resumes, and applications to people who receive hundreds of them everyday and do not have the time to read them. The might read a few resumes from highly qualified captains and chief engineers — but from aspiring deckhands? They don’t take distant applicants from some place up north that they have never heard of very seriously because most of them will never show up to work. They mostly hire on a crisis basis from the pool of applicants that happens to be standing in their office at the moment when they urgently need someone with his qualifications.

Being there ready to go is the number one qualification — especially for a deckhand.

I think you are right, tugsailor.

Try Hornbeck, Chouest, tidewater, seacor, Otto candies, GOL, and Harvey gulf. I stomped the pavement for 3 months I was hired on with seacor. Made a drive once a week for 3 months from Biloxi, MS to talk to each company face to face. You just got to keep with it.

C&G, graham offshore, apply for liftboat companies. Sorry for the repost but I’m just looking around Port Fourchon at all the different companies here. May have left out a few.

Have you tried tug companies like Kirby Inland Marine? I hear they’re always hiring

Don’t go to collie towing out of Pascagoula, ms unless your desperate. I worked there for two weeks about two years ago. Found out I was making $9.50 an hour and laughed at them and never looked back.

No deck spots right now. crap.

Yep, applied to ALL of these. and called on the phone. nothing…yet.

Calling doesn’t help with any of these companies. Offshore is a different type of app process. You have to show initiative and go there and talk to them repeatedly.

Yep, Hornbeck just called me. No openings till Sept. Crap! :frowning:

Here’s a new great lakes gig for AB

Yeah work doesn’t really pick up till mid August in the gulf. Kind of weird due to the fact that it’s the roughest seas of the year at that time.

Rough? Try the Bering Sea… you can’t have ANYTHING loose on the ship, all of it becomes missle hazards, trice yourself into you rack at night. Ever try sleeping on a roller coaster? Aft lookout had to wear a climbing harness to keep from being swept over. Fantail was 30 feet above the waterline. I really think it was like being in a hurricane. F’ing Brutal… but exciting as hell!

Missed a job with ECO… I was out screwing around in the yard mowing/weedeating, they called, I missed the call. %#$$&@^%#&#&@!!! Dammitttt. On the brightside somebody called me. Iam so bummed. From now on if I’m in the shower the phone will be in there with me…depressing as hell. It was one of those “first guy to answer” calls…
