Does anybody know what’s the normal rotation is for harbour tugs? And can you go home off watch if you live in the area?
varies from harbor to harbor, without knowing where its tough to say. In new york its often 2 weeks on 2 off, the other extreme is in a place like searsport maine you may only have a few jobs a week and go home everyday and only work when needed.
No way to know without knowing the exact company. As z-drive said it ranges from day work and home most every night of the week, to 2 weeks on/2 weeks off, and everything in between. Most are not going to let you leave the tug just to run to the house. If they offer 24 hour service and are any kind of busy, they are going to want you on that boat.
Yes, and in many cases seniority, relationship with dispatch (do you buy them pizza the day before crew change?) etc can increase flexibility to take off once in a while if you’re “expected” to be on the boat.
7/7 in Charleston, Savannah, & Jacksonville. If it’s slow they do let you go home for a few hours.
How about Philadelphia?
It’s gonna be the same through out most of the northeast 2weeks on/2 off. Unless you go to a specific company that does it differently but you’d have to hunt around, asking the companies, to find it.
You could look for a job on a dinner boat or ferry, something like that gets you home every night.
I’ve heard Moran and Mac in philly are pretty flexible about going home.
Norfolk is 7/7 Moran and I think mac is 2/2
What’s the pay like for engineers and what kind if license they’re looking for if any?
Sometimes harbor tugs don’t care about license if you have good experience but a DDE or qmed is usually good enough for most places. Probably. $350-450 a day inside id guess
I heard Moran in Baltimore does 2 for 1 but they’re real laid back about people running home in between jobs when its slow. Its similar to a day boat job when the work is slow.

Think that’ll depend on the Company and location- I work in Corpus and it’s a 7/7, while Houston, Freeport, Galveston and Texas City are all 4/4 (Same company)

Again depends on the Company of course. A few of the Boat’s down here have unlicensed Engineers, and a others have DDE 4000-Any and Some have 3rd A/E’s.
Generally (at least with my company) if you have a license you’ll be wanted, Pay is on the lower side comparatively speaking but.
Unlicensed Engineers- $270.00 a day
DDE-4000 $322.10
DDE Any HP $360.00
3rd A/E $378.00
Chief License $418

The last I heard was that Moran Philly stopped letting guys go home a while back. The last straw was that a mate missed a job, I’m not sure if that was the only time or if there had been previous issues with missed jobs.
I wonder how hard is it to get a job with them? Are they SIU? I have QMED any rating and been sailing electrician for SIU for the last 10 years or so. Thinking about relocating to Philly and spend more time with family.

They are non union and carry one (unlicensed) engineer per boat. If they need someone they’ll probably hire you. If I had to guess I’d say pay is probably ~ $325 a day.
I’m sure you can find a job somewhere between baltimore and philly with a pretty flexible schedule. lots of waterfront. pick up the phone and call around. if i were answering the phone and made hiring decisions you’d get my attention by saying something like “I’m an experienced QMED” because every tugboat company gets calls from bozo’s with ZERO experience on a daily basis.
yeah I’ve seen bozo couple at this outfit haha
