[B]Iran says warships sailing towards U.S.[/B]

An Iranian naval officer said a number of warships had been ordered to approach U.S. maritime borders as a response to the stationing of U.S. vessels in the Gulf, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Saturday.

“Iran’s military fleet is approaching the United States’ maritime borders, and this move has a message,” the agency quoted Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad as saying.

Haddad, described as commander of the Iranian navy’s northern fleet, said the vessels had started their voyage towards the Atlantic Ocean via “waters near South Africa”, Fars reported.

Fars said the plan was part of “Iran’s response to Washington’s beefed up naval presence in the Persian Gulf.”

The Fars report, which carried no details of the vessels, could not be confirmed independently.

In Washington, a U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cast doubt on any claims that the Iranian ships were approaching U.S. maritime borders. But the official added that “ships are free to operate in international waters.”

The United States and its allies regularly stage naval exercises in the Gulf, saying they want to ensure freedom of navigation in the waterway through which 40 percent of the world’s seaborne oil exports passes.

U.S. military facilities in the region include a base for its Fifth Fleet in the Gulf Arab kingdom of Bahrain.

Iran sees the Gulf as its own backyard and believes it has a legitimate interest in expanding its influence there.

Iranian officials have often said Iran could block the Strait of Hormuz, at the mouth of the Gulf, if it came under military attack over its disputed nuclear programme, and the Western war games are seen in the region as an attempt to deter any such move.

Fars said the Iranian navy had been developing its presence in international waters since 2010, regularly launching vessels in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian ships from Somali pirates operating in the area.

I sailed with an Iranian American guy on a Matson Ammo ship and the guy was great to work with. He and I pulled a winch motor out on deck and he needed no supervision and grabbed the tools without me telling him “Get a 15/16” wrench, get a breaker bar, get a 1/2 ton chain fall. He looked at the job and did 1/2 the work with me. Not all Iranians are shitheads. Do I trust the Mullahs, no. I don’t think their navy is very fearsome and probably will break down on the way. Maybe they will defect and live with all us infidels after they visit the girls in Havana.

The only good thing about the Iranian’s, is they still have F-14’s and F-4’s. While they are no match for our air force, they are still awesome aircraft.

Like where do they get parts for these? Becha they’re cannibalizing their own to keep a few able to get airborne. Would love to see a handful of Israeli fighters go in and wipe out the whole Iranian Air Force in 20minutes before the bombers take out the nuke enrichment plants

I haven’t checked “da Googles” yet but I suppose that most of their inventory consists of someone else’s used and barely floating crap-ola. Hell, some of their inventory may be American because as some of you astute history and militaria buffs know, Iran is the ONLY country in the world still operating the F-14 Tomcat. Now, there’s some trivia for you guys who like to bet a couple bucks here and there.

my guess would be on the black market as well as cannibalizing their own aircraft. Israel would make short work of what ever they put up. The Israeli air force is probably the best in the world.

They are the only other country other than the U.S to operate the F-14.

I could see them using the swarm of small boats in the confined straits, but what gives with the unguided rockets where you have to be a few hundred meters away to hit a stationary target? Swarms of WWII torpedo boats would be much more effective, and they still were not that successful during WWII.
