Greetings from Norway

This was the summer long the west coast of Norway, 2026:

PS: The post above is typical of the autumn. Watch this space for winter. :worried:

Have you driven on a Floating Bridge:

Anyone?

Some facts about Bergsøysund Bridge:

The short answer is yes, there are 3 floating bridges across Lake Washington near Seattle, Washington.

They are on the move everywhere in the high plateaus in Southern Norway at this time of the year:

If anybody here is planning a road trip in Norway it may be wise to read this long article first to avoid common mistakes, like thinking it is like driving in mainland Europe, or in USA:

Driving in winter requires a VERY different knowledge and preparations:

PS: Even if you are not planning a trip anytime soon, it may be “educational” to read the two articles above.

While we are talking about road trips in Norway, here are some recommendations:

More for your Norway bucket list:

No, Scandinavians are not impolite, they are just being polite without saying “Please” (sincerely or not) all the time:

Norway is popular in BBC today:

Got a big catch: – Like an explosion

The monster fish weighed almost 300 kilograms:

Tromsø today:

Not yet, but coming SOON!!:

Advent City, Svalbard is not among the biggest and busiest in the world:

No traffic jam, even in rush hours. Fresh air guaranteed at all times.

Not far from Longyearbyen and Svalbard Airport:

Did you know?: :bouvet_island:

I think that Britain would like the same deal but I can’t see them getting it. Illegal migrants flooding into Europe consider Europe a way station on their way to Britain. The primary reason they left the EU in the first place was to try and control their borders.

I assume your reply was to the video above, not about Advent City.

Yes I also assume that the Brits would have liked to have a similar deal to Norway. The difference being that Norway have never joined and left EU, but are member of EEA, together with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

(Don’t know if UK could join them, though)

The main reason Norway has voted NOT to join twice is obviously to keep control of the fish stock and other resources within the Norwegian EEZ: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Norwegian-exclusive-economic-zone-EEZ-Source-United-Nations_fig13_324389587

The other reason is that EU set limitation on subsidies that can be granted to farmers. To have the ability to have SOME agriculture in Norway is vital for both food security and to maintain a spread population. (over 1/3 of the length of Norway is north of the Arctic Circle)

BTW: The area of international waters between the Russian and Norwegian EEZ, is popularly know as “Smutthullet”: (“Loophole”)

The area between Jan Mayen and mainland Norway’s EEZ is known as “Smutthavet”:

PS: A popular pub in Ålesund, often frequented by both active and former fishermen, is also also called “Smutthullet”. Amazing fishing stories are told there:

A “new” member of the “Maritime Cluster”, centred in Ålesund:

Shows up it is not so new, only a new owner and name for some well known names in the maritime industry: Who we are — Neuver Maritime

The highlighted names are the original brands. Anybody here familiar with their steering gears, rudders and more?

The rest of their history is here: Our history — Neuver Maritime

“Hurtigruten” (Coastal Express) is frequently mistaken as being “just another cruise line”. It is far more than that, it still is a lifeline for people and industries along the Norwegian coast, from Bergen to Kirkenes v.v., calling at 34 ports daily, each way. The ships are carrying both round trip and point-to-point passengers, all kinds of goods, incl. fresh and frozen produce, and a few cars. (Mail is no longer carried)

Today the route is served by two companies; Hurtigruten ASA (8 ships) and Havila Kystruten AS (4 ships).

Here is a presentation of “hurtigruten”, past and present:

Remember this drum from the FIFA World Cup this summer?

For this year’s “TV Campaign” in Norway it was actioned off for NOK 1.3 Mill.

The TV Campaign has been an annual event in Norway for 50 year:

PS: Our new King, Haakon VIII participated as a “collector” during this year’s campaign:
