Grad License Program: A few questions

Hi all,

I am seriously looking into pursuing and completing the Grad License Program at SUNY but have a few questions; this seemed like the best place to find the answers. I have read other posts on the subject and found a some answers but I had a few more questions I wanted to ask.

  • Is it required for Grad students to live on campus? Do any of them live on campus?

    • If living off campus, what can one expect to pay for lodging?

    • Who do I contact to find out if I need any additional pre-requisite courses before attending the Grad program? I assume I would need to send my transcript to Admissions.

    • Does anyone have any recommended contacts at SUNY that I should ask for when going through the application process?

    • Can you start the program in January?

    • Is this a 2, 2 1/2 , or 3 year program?

    • I recall someone mentioning that grad students only take two summer cruises and that one could even do both of these in the same summer. True?

    • What is a typical day like in the life of a grad student at SUNY? I have read that you will attend license classes during the day and grad classes at night but how much of the actual day and night are taken up by classes? Will I have time to eat/workout/wash clothes?

-I don’t have any seagoing experience other than a few fishing trips. Is this a problem?

Thanks.

However fast you get it done. However the license classes part will require you to be here and will take 2 years if you are lucky.

  • I recall someone mentioning that grad students only take two summer cruises and that one could even do both of these in the same summer. True?

Yes, you need three cruises to get the 3rd mate unlimited, you can substitute you 2nd class cruise with Cadet Observer.

You wake up, eat, and go to class. Grad classes run at all hours. You can schedule them for certain days and times, some are not on this campus. You will have plenty of time for laundry and working out. You will be required to be in uniform anytime you are in a class, and generally from 0700 to 1600 m-F You will also be require to attend formation on Tuesdays at 0720 hrs and additionally thursdays for the first few weeks of the semester.
