First trip to South Louisiana

I am headed down on the 9th and staying until the 13th of March. I have my MMC OS/wiper/food handler as well as my twic and have taken the stcw-95. I have a list of company’s that I would like to work at. Ill have a bag packed and ready to go. Anyone have any last minute advise?

My step father is a chief at ECO and has spoken with Nicky but its been awhile. I am hoping that will help along with a couple of recommendations.
I have reservations at the Cajun inn in Galliano.

I am going down hopeful that I will find a job. is there any other documents or paperwork I should bring along?

Anything medical in your past like minor surgeries, ect. They often want supporting documents for that kind of stuff at the physical.

bring a whole bucket of Crawdads when you walk in and you’ll be hired in no time flat

…that or a few tins of Copenhagen

Shit, crawdads are almost $6/lb now. The freezes put a hurt on them…

Look at the threads: Read this First, and Knocking on Doors in Louisiana.

Thanks I’ve read these already. I stoke the page quiet often.
I am going down with high hopes, but at the same time telling myself that ill more than likely be coming home empty handed. I have been working towards this for a few months now.
Can anyone tell me what company’s are the big hitters? I am guessing I will have more luck there.

I would think you would have more luck with the smaller companies but that’s just…like,… my opinion man.

A blank check that you will void out to verify your direct deposit. Gonna want to get paid… Got to think like you are going to work.

I would be sitting in the ECO office on a Monday morning, fill out an application and wait.

Good luck.

Dude if it has a boat on the sign of in the name or just looks like a boat company, look for a parking lot full of cars that is way to big for the building next to it, and stop in. If you’re goal is to work in the oil patch take what ever shitty job you can, especially with your lack of experience, and work you’re way up.

This is the plan, but at the same time I will not take a job that pays less than what I make now. I work on a land biased rig now. so I have oil field experience, just not offshore oilfield experience. I make decent pay on land so its going to be hard for me to find a job offshore that’s going to pay my bills at first.

Then don’t waste your time. You’re not going to make any money as an OS

If your experience is on the drilling side (as opposed to the supply side) then you might consider the rigs instead of the boats. I don’t know what experience will gain for you there as far as starting pay/position, but drilling experience on a boat is useless.

Any experience on a boat is useless if you are starting out as an OS… You will be told what to do and when to do it… All for $180 /day or less.

$180 a day is better than I have heard from a few people. They were telling me in the $130 to $150 range. I am applying more for a wiper position than on deck. I would prefer to be in the engine room. I have heard more around the $180 to $200 as a wiper. $150 a day is like making $12.50 an hour. Hell I cant pay my bills at 12.50 an hour. If I can find something in the $175 to $200 a day range I’ll ask how high when they tell me to jump, and work towered an upgrade asap.

I know that my experience in the oil field will do nothing for me on a boat, but I am very good with my hand and very mechanically inclined. Any of my references or past employers will confirm that.

I have too much money invested in this to not go down and give it a shot. I will have my bags packed and will be ready to go. All I need is an opportunity.

They don’t care how bad you want it or your potential down the road…

Let’s do some math… 12.50/hour times 40 hours a week =500 American dollars a week * 52 weeks a year = $26,000

180 /day * 240 days a year = $43 big. That’s a 28/14 rotation.

Make sure you compare apples to apples.

4 hitches plus 1 week and some bust ass on your part and you will get AB pay around 300/day…

I’m not doing any more of the math for you… It all depends on what you want and how hard you are willing to work for it.

Good luck.

I can do $180 a day, no problem. I was saying $150 a day is like making $12.50 an hour. Ya at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks you make $26,000 but at $150 a day your only making $33,600. Hell with some OT at $12.50 hr the 33 grand mark is doable. If I can hit the $40,000 mark I can make it. It would tight as hell, but I could do it. If I get on somewhere I will be looking to bust my ass and upgrade asap.

Like most people im not doing this to make a living, I am doing it to start a career. The land based company I work for now has very limited opportunity to move up. I bust my ass day in and day out and would be in the same place 5 years from now.
I appreciate all the good lucks, I will need them.
Thanks

If this is something that you want to do to start a career, then $150-180 is pretty much what you will be looking at for base pay. Put some time in and get your AB and you can pretty much expect to get your pay around 250/day maybe a little more depending on the company. If you come out and work some straight time you can get that sea time you need fast and start making more money. Just dont go in with expectations that you will make a killing right off that bat. Not a lot of experience on a boat in the oil patch = bottom of the barrel pay.

You should really try and use that connection with ECO!

If you wouldnt mind hooking up another “newbie” sailor, when you talk to “Uncle Nicky” again tell him Im still waiting on the call back about the 900 a day assistants job working 14-28. Thanks.
