Today is a huge day for me. It took me 2 rounds but I finally finished all of my tests and will soon have my 1600 ton master oceans in hand! Although it took me 2 rounds my final scores ended up being 100 plot, 100 terrestrial, 94 rules, 92 deck general, and a pair of 86’s on safety and nav general. I would have been plenty happy with 90’s and 70’s!haha…As of right now I’m pretty up to date/speed on the process and what’s showing up on the tests. If any of you have any questions feel free to let me know.
Although it pains me big time that I can’t tell him, I want to say a huge thanks to my friend and peer Richard Lippencott, who passed away a couple of years ago. When I was in my early 20’s I was living on a boat and Richard was my neighbor. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with my life at that point. I knew I liked boats and was interested in working on them, but had no idea how to get started. Richard worked at Tidewater at the time, and gave me the kick in the ass and the connection to get started. I went to work for Tidewater as an os and that was in 1998. I kept in touch with Richard over the years and usually checked in with him a few times a year. One time I called and his phone wasn’t working so I called his work (Graham) and they told me the terrible news I am very thankful to him for showing me the path that I chose to take and I will be forever grateful for that.
I know we all take different paths to get to the same place, and mine has been a long one and I’m not complaining! (except for a few coast guard rec fuckings! Old system btw, the nmc and new system has been great as far as I’m concerned!). I’m super relieved to finish this part of the venture! I thought that this was my goal, but now those unlimited licenses are sounding tempting!!haha…Thanks for taking the time to read my babbling!
Congratulations! I know what a relief it is to get that behind you. Each time I expected a marching band and dancing girls, only to be disappointed. Next time I am down south I will buy you a beer…or two!
Thanks for the good words amigos! It’s weird to wake up and not have to think about studying! Maybe I’ll take a couple of practice tests just for the hell of it…haha… Joking big time of course!!
Im trying to study for my 1600 master NC test. Any pointers? Im self studying using some freelance software from hawsepipe.net . The only thing im kinda worried about is Terrestrial Nav because i have no clue what to expect. What reference books did you find most helpful in the testroom?

You better know what to expect on terrestrial before you get in the testing room, because that test will eat your lunch if you do not prepare for it. You are going to need a bowditch, nautical almanac, tides and currents book, maneuvering boards, and a good calculator. lapware.org you can print out the terrestrial test for 1600 ton Master can be printed and taken as practice and I can tell you from experience that the tests are pretty close. Capt. Joe’s has some problems worked out and so does lapware so you can self teach all of the questions. You have to make a 90 % so you can only miss one. You will get a tide problem, a current problem, an amplitude or an azimuth, a slip, time tick, a couple of bearing problems, possibly a consumption problem, deviation table. These are all in the murphy books but they are not worked out. I spent a couple of weeks self study before I was confident in the subject.
Marching bands? They had stripper poles complete with strippers in the lobby when I walked out with Motley Crue there playing live!!
Thanks for the study tips. It gave me a good guage of my time and spent some serious hours studying.
Catch you in Miami!
Great Job, Congratulations…Come to Dauphin Island and I’ll buy you a couple of cold ones at the Pelican Pub…
Thanks everyone! I actually turned around and took a job on a 62’, 70 gross ton sport yacht…haha…Good owner…good pay…local boat…but kind of funny
To the guy asking about the terrestrial test…Yeah it’s no joke! Once you learn everything it’s pretty easy, but there is a lot to learn and no room for errors. On my terrestrial tests I pretty much had a time tick, azimuth, amplitude, consumption, sunset, tvmdc, slip/rpm…and I’m brain farting on the rest of them right now!!haha
