Engineering life on ATBs? Or, other engineering job options?

Hello helpful hive-mind, my brother in law has his 3AE license (upgrading to 2AE early next year) and is looking at options beyond his current employer in the Gulf. He’s not in MEBA but not against joining.

He’s specifically asked me about ATBs, which I know little about, but I’ll just put out his wish list and see what options in general there are. If ATBs would fit the bill, he’d love details on working life.

Pay, he’d want something at least $130k/yr plus benefits, which is less than he’s making now. Even-time rotations of 50 days or less. He’d want to keep his Unlimited rating. Are there ATB jobs available that fit those needs? Or, are there other jobs y’all might recommend?

Shouldn’t be too hard to find an assistant spot on an ATB these days. Most companies run 3/3 or 4/4. I know there are some 45/45 units in alaska.

Crowley and Kirby probably pay the highest. 130k a year shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Related question, what sort of proportion is it between company employees, MEBA, or other unions that run the engines on our ATB fleet?

Crowley runs several ATB which are relatively new vessels and in good condition, in the 500 ft range and long-term contracts with some big oil companies

they are also using their tankers for USN fleet refueling operations.

most work is out of Jacksonville and they do some limited coastwise on the west coast Alaska to lower California.

good pay and good food. small crews as they are essentially rule beaters relative to manning requirements over tankers
