Electric ships

Japan it not going to be left behind in the race to develop new green maritime technolog:

The first electric powered ferry has already entered service:

I believe the electric craze has to benefit from better storage capability (visualize Star Trek) and much faster recharge rates.

The technology is already in place and the fleet of battery powered vessel, mostly ferries, are growing by the day:

Inductive charging in 10 min. or less may be the key that make this possible:

In Norway it is the aim to have at least 70 fully electric powered ferries in operation by end of 2021:

Hydrogen power MAY be the solution on longer routes and for other types of vessels.
The first such ferry is under construction and will enter service in spring 2021:

Electric ships are coming around the world:

Not least Electric ferries:

The earlier one was a refit.

A bright future for electric propulsion of ships?:

In Norway the fleet of electric powered ferries are expanding rapidly, largely thanks to the advanced technology for rapid recharging:

From the left wing rag Maritime Executive:

i didn’t read all that but here and in Europe there are many plans to backup solar/wind power with battery farms.
Even the most ambitious plans will net MAYBE 20 minits of use for a average sized city … can you imagine running general dynamics or McDonald Douglas for a shift on battery power?
Its just feel good political moves at this stage… it’ll be a few years till we have batteries like seen on star trek, when we get there it’ll be feasible.
sure, they ran subs on batteries and can do it with ships too but there are limitations.

Contradiction in term?:

Not intended as main power for large ship, but some extra power “up your sleeve” is always nice to have:

It had to come. (If nothing else, for the bragging rights)

Refurbish ferry is back in service after being electrified:

More river shuttle ferries are entering service this year. This time on the river Thames in London:

The last I read current solar cells develope about 10-15% of theoretical capacity. I’m sure batteries are not near that. I haven’t cared enough to research it but there are probably similar theories out there regarding theoretical batttery capacities.

Can it beat the trucking freight rates?
