Philip Klotzbach and William Gray from the Colorado State University have issued their April extended range forecast for the North Atlantic 2011 hurricane season. They continue to forecast a well above normal season with a total of 16 named storms, 9 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes. By comparison, 2010 saw 19 named storms while the average year sees about 9 or 10 named storms The risk for at least one major (cat. 3-5) hurricane making landfall in the US is forecast to be 72% during 2011 vs. 52% during an average year.
