Hi guys,
For the last few years I’ve noticed that at the far end of the pier in Seattle just past the container ships (aft of Hyundai and Cosco, opposite from CMG-CGM and Maersk) there’s always been an old ship moored up and it never leaves. Is it an old Matson vessel? Horizon? What is it doing there? If anyone who is in the Seattle area can help me identify what ship that is that would be awesome!
I believe that is the old MAUI or KAUAI. Don’t think she puts to sea much anymore these daze.
always wondered why Matson didn’t use those oldies as the USAF ammo prepo ships that Sealift seems to always win?
Thanks C.Captain! I’ve literally been trying to find that out for a long time.
Yeah, it just seems like a waste of space just sitting there!

Maui is in Hawaii on a run right now. That might be the Kauai in Seattle. Even though she looks like she has been sitting for years, she was running last summer. Matson only seems to break her out for a few months here and there.
So after C.Captain said it was a Matson ship I did some more digging and came to the conclusion it is probably the Lurline (built 1980-container/roro). Is this ship laid up for good? Anyone know what it’s fate will be? It’s been rotting away for quite a while.

She is a VERY old ship…she was not built in 1980 but in 1973!
41 years old and a burner of something like 800bbl of bunker fuel a day to operate…OUCH!
Oh yes, Lurline. I last nighthawked on her in 06? In Oakland. Friend of mine sailed first on her a couple years ago. Haven’t heard when the last time she was broke out.
880bbl bunker fuel per day, holy hell.
Looks like a cool ship though, always wanted to go onboard and tour around on her. I can see the funnel from the roof of my apartment complex. Wonder if or when she will be moved. Yeah, it’s great they have a few new build container ships going on in Akers, but it’s just depressing seeing that thing sit there. I read the forum and see people debating the future of the Jones Act, hear the BS on the radio and in the news, and then literally, not metaphorically, see the depletion of our fleet from my apartment.
Anyways, cool ship though, a lot of character in her!
She may have gone out last year. Not sure and to lazy to look through the West Coast Sailor. I do know that she was running in 2011-12. I broke out the Lahuie, another oldie, for 1 trip to Hawaii. 2 days later I was a standby for a few days putting the Lurline up.They were using her and another ship to rotate out the other Matson ships for shipyard periods in China.
built when fuel oil was $30/ton and speed made big $$$

I always felt the SunShip built Ro/Ros were butt fucking ugly pigs. The Bath built Ro/Ro’s built for States Lines were much more attractive. All Cape I class RRF vessels today,
It’s the lurline, she’s been laid up for over a year now. They took her out and and spun her 180 and put her back about 10mo ago. Rumor I heard is she will be getting scrapped at some point.

Went to Gulf War I on the Isabel, was a beautiful ship.

Kind of looks like the USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus. Cool looking ships!

Thanks for sharing. With this picture I was transported to that place.
You took the picture C.Capitan? … Can I share it on my Facebook page?
Greetings!

[/QUOTE]I am right there with ya. I recall Navieras had a couple of those Sun ROROs, too. One was layed up in Galveston for a some time back when I was with ABS. Don’t recall if I ever boarded her. I sailed on two of the Maine class ROROs. They were/are beautiful ships. While most ROROS of that type were diesel, the ol’ US of A had steamers. . . . pretty cool plants, too (except for those crappy feed pumps).

They were just good old fashioned and dependable Coffins. Rebuilt one on the Isabel but it was no big deal.
