I’m licensed STCW 78/95 second engineer unlimited from E Union(US -Firs Ass. Engineer Unlimited)
I have been a second and chief engineer for over twenty-five years and have experience with many types of engines and ships, including thirteen years on tug boats along the Mississippi River and Intra-Coastal Waterways. This includes working on Ultra Large Crude Carriers, tankers, Ro-Ro’s, bulk carriers, passenger vessels, general cargo, fishing trawlers, tug and many others ships, which have ranged from 3000 to 120,000 horsepower, including HFO (heavy fuel oil engines)and steam turbans for American, British, Greek, Kuwait, French/Algerian, and Bulgarian company
Could I ask for your help in drafting a letter to the USCG-NMC regarding what is the highest license I can receive from them based on my previous EU license. Back in 2014, I did not get a chance to renew my EU license because I was working on a research vessel at the time and my USCG physical then was not valid for the EU
That is a non routine application to NMC. NMC staff will be very confused. I suggest that you hire a good license consultant. Search in the forum for names and phone numbers.
It sounds like you should qualify for a USCG 1AE or CE unlimited license but the STCW is going to be tricky. All the classes are going to have to be redone in the US and I’m not sure what they’ll do about the modern requirement for assessments and such performed onboard. You might just need to find a boat with a properly licensed engineer and get the assessments signed off.
