It is now a re-titled version of an engineer’s license endorsement.
“Any Unlicensed Rating in the Engine Department is no longer issued. Endorsements of mariners who previously held this will be replaced with QMED Any Rating.”
Not sure what they do on steamships now but on the SS President Coolidge, a Mariner class ship, they did not have QMEDs, they had wipers, fireman, oilers, all separately required per the COI. Now an Oiler superseded a Fireman but that was how the COI was noted. I remember I had to copy it for my sea project in 1973.
