Not that it applies here but most times if US Customs were to board a vessel all goes well,
can remember hearing about some Louisiana
shipyards getting a visit and some workers
fled the area, and even though they have been
some of the hardest laborers they probably lacked
the background checks & any & all of the credentialing that a US mariner has. They
actually have cheap labor that wouldn’t think
twice about entering a confined space without
it being tested.
As of January 1, 2023. Averages for USA:
Tugs;
Captain $723
Chief Mate $633
Licensed Engineer $760
AB $375
OS $249 (no MMC)
OSV:
Captain $840
Chief Mate $810
Licensed Engineer $925
AB $367
OS $225 ($347 top)
Engineers make more than the captain! It’s about time. Deep sea is next!
I am a experienced Captain, and am interested in your delivery work.
This my first time on this page how do week communicate from now on?

In general most new blood coming in has some sense of entitlement. Its one of the traits of the current generation. The concept of working hard and putting in their time along with advancement befuddles them.
The reality is that we need new blood coming in and you as an employer need them more than they need you. Most people with any sense won’t choose this as a career. They want to be home every night. Can’t say I blame them. Its gotten to the point that there has to be some serious incentive to go live on a boat for weeks at a time, sharing a room and head, etc.
Assuming a day rate pays 240 a day and its a 12 hr day, thats 20 bucks an hour. I am not privy to what minumum wage is in the gulf states, but in a few states minimum wage is awfully close to that 20 an hr. Why go work weeks on a old shitty stinking boat, share a room.with some jerk, eat crappy food and work a 6 hr on 6 hr off stupid watch schedule if i can make the same and be home? Doesn’t make sense does it? Its a moot point to tell them that if they put their time in in 5 years they can be making 6 figures.
Curious what your source is? Your data seems roughly accurate
My first job inland waters paid what is now illegal because its below current minimum wage. My first day working on the water the Captain made exactly 240. That same 240 is what a green OS with no STCW can expect today. Thing is you gotta account for inflation, because the 240 today is not the same 240 back then.
This website. Chiefly the Mariner Pay 2023 thread. Also, similar threads in Dec. 2022/Jan. 2023. Using only self-reported rates of pay most of the time, as opposed to hearsay, and tending to use data from longtime contributors as opposed to newbies: a matter of track record. Then a simple spreadsheet.
Anchor handling vessels are a smaller segment
but the vessels & the crews should be getting
paid well, definitely couldn’t see why anyone
would especially work with a jet/pipeline barge
running anchors around the clock for less than
$900 a day when there are plenty of towing
jobs in the 750-800 range. I bet it’s getting
to where a vessel/mate point A to B guy
Can turn there nose up at anything less
than $700 day if they have a towing endorsement
and maybe Western Rivers
This is repeated ad nauseam but it’s not true. What “new blood” has figured out is there is zero loyalty or care from the company, regardless of industry. There is no pension calling at the end of 30 years for an employee, so why should he stick around? In the corporate world, the only way to get a real pay increase or promotion is to change companies (aka quit, or threaten to quit).
40 years ago there were apprentice programs to train young workers. There were young-management rotational programs for up-and-coming leadership stars. Most of office “leadership” rose through the rank of operations before assuming decision making roles. Very little of that exists now, regardless of industry (shipping, manufacturing, energy, logistics, etc). Everything is “on the job training” or “web based training”, both of which are garbage.
It’s really fun working for a shipping company that has an office with maybe one person that worked on a ship. And the entire senior leadership has never worked in any type of industrial/production operations position, let alone on a vessel. How about a “technical interview” for a promotion in which the evaluation is by HR people and a geeky electrical engineer or naval architect. How disconnected from reality can it get? They don’t care about us, so why should we care about them?
Boomer-HR-inc created theses rules, don’t hate the young players for figuring out how to play the game. It is a transaction based relationship. Nothing more.
And don’t be surprised when they turn their backs on capitalism thinking that a socialist regime is the answer.
What exists today in hardly true capitalism. It’s crony capitalism.
And while I disagree with their desire for free shit and universal basic income, I can understand how they come to such conclusions. But, if people had a little bit of hunger in their life with less full stomachs, many of these superficial problems would immediately vanish.
Good Morning,
I am a Licensed 100 Ton Master w/ Passport. Interested in talking about deliveries.
