Here in Ålesund the eclipse will be over 85% total:
– This is the biggest the solar eclipse we have had in Norway since 2015, and the largest we will get before 2039.
This is what astrophysicist Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard says. He will see the celestial phenomenon himself from Atlanterhavsparken in Ålesund, and says that Sunnmøringer will have extra good conditions this time. Over 85 percent of the sun will be covered. The eclipse will be greatest in the far west of the country, so those in Ålesund and elsewhere in Sunnmøre will have some of the best views in Norway, he says.

However, it is not the solar eclipse alone that makes Ødegaard open his eyes. Just hours after the solar eclipse, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak, providing ample opportunities to see a number of shooting stars throughout the evening. That combination is quite intense. Statistically, it’s almost impossible. It could be many thousands of years between each time we get two such large celestial phenomena so close to each other, he says.
The fact that the solar eclipse occurs during a new moon makes the experience even better. This eliminates the moonlight that would otherwise have interfered with the view of the shooting stars. This provides very good observation conditions.
