Convicted Navy Nuclear Machinists Mate

Hello all! I am a former Navy Nuclear Machinists Mate that is interested in the Merchant Mariners. I have been doing quite a bit of research and love what I am seeing and the opportunities that it could provide my family.

A little background on me: I was a Nuke and was discharged (General Discharge) in 2013. In 2014, I was convicted of Computer Hacking. I did my time and got out in 2016. Since then, I have gone to school and got my masters degree in IT management. As many might already know, securing work with a felony is hard enough. Having one related to computers is even worse and has essentially made my degree useless in the civilian world.

I have read that mariners or all types, even those with convictions, are welcomed. I want to see what opportunities are out there for me. I am really interest in QMED and took a couple of the practice examples. My background as a machinists mate really helps there and I am scoring well on the tests. In engineering an option for me or am I looking at a deckhand type position?

Appreciate any and all insight here!

Try to see if you can get a TWIC card first. Take your birth certificate with you. It’ll be about $140 + or -

Good advice. From what I have read online so far, this should be fairly easy for me to get since it has been 10 years since the conviction. Will see how it goes. Thanks!

Go to https://mfoww.org. Click on “downloads” and then “entry level flyer.” All info is there.

Found this. eCFR :: 46 CFR 10.211 -- Criminal record review. Not sure where you conviction would land you as it’s not listed. But, it seems that 10yrs is the longest.
