when I worked in Malaysia, for example, my employer refused to drug test us because the penalty there for a positive whiz quiz is life in jail!
Excellent point,
I’d like to see my company/union do something similar. “Our employee has been getting annual and random drug testing for the past 8 years, here’s a record of it, now kindly piss off and leave his body hair alone”
John, I have to disagree with you on this one.If you can’t vent here, politics or not, game over.
I agree. As long as things do not denigrate into a political discussion of left, right etc., there is no reason to restrict what we mariners have to say about matters foisted upon us by whomever is making the rules we must follow. Thank you for giving us a forum and we appreciate the work it has taken to get this website to this point. But if it becomes a forum where open discourse without personal and political attack is discouraged it will be just another commercial website owned by the advertisers. The open expression of ideas is one of the reason why gCaptain has the internet traffic it does now and can attract advertisers up until now. Also, historically we have been pretty civil and decent for a bunch of sailors!
Chill John.
WAIT a minute. It is NOT the government that is demanding these tests it is the Nazis at the company you work for and their lawyers. They want to use something you MAY have done one year ago to shift blame and responsibility from themselves. The companies are the fascists though I do blame the government that the voters elected for letting them get by with this crap. Where are the unions in all this invasion of privacy? Oh, they don’t exist in most areas of the industry any more and they have caved to the fascists in the others. The “Patriot Act” was the beginning of the end for individual rights and privacy in the USA. A former president stated shortly after 9-11 stated. “They hate us for our freedom”. He then proceeded to take away our freedoms via the Patriot Act [a misnomer if there ever was one]. Who won? Tengineer, I think you are close. I think its not actually the companies we work for, but rather the insurance companies who are running this scam.
So I don’t mind peeing in a cup(or giving hair or what ever), I’ve got nothing to hide and did it about four days ago… BUT here’s a question for you… What would happen if someone went to Amsterdam, on a personal vacation, smoked dope where it is LEGAL, Had the stamp in their passport to prove they were there. So, NO LAWS WERE BROKEN,but there would be THC in their hair samples. They came home and had to give hair samples a month or two later, Now what? They broke no laws, or did anything wrong. If they drove 120MPH on the autobahn, while in Europe, they don’t get back to the U.S. and get a speeding ticket do they? Just something to ponder.
Nothing to ponder. If you hold a license, you can not have THC or a number of other drugs in your system at any time, PERIOD. It is in the CFR. If you really want to smoke or whatever, turn in your license. Personal freedom disappeared out the window long before 9/11 and we keep giving it away at every opportunity. Talk about it all you want but it is not going to change it is only getting worse…
The only way to change it is through Congress and they can’t even balance our checkbook let alone figure out a complex issue such as personal freedom.
I am filing out my paperwork for my license renewal and on the new medical form it asks what VITAMINS and food SUPPLEMENTS you have taken in the last 3 MONTHS! Good god! This is just going too far. What The f do you think about this???

They have had the ability to and have been following all of us for the past 11 years on ours cellphone and listen to all your phone conversations on landlines and you’re worrying about a silly question like this from the USCG? Where have you been? We gave up our rights as individuals years ago. Just follow the rest of the sheep into the Soylent Green machine…
Chief… Your age is showing! Now for those who don’t know, find the movie. The parallels are quite amazing. George Orwell, are you there. 1984 came and went! Who knew?
