Chouest paying 970 a day in Brazil?
I wish bud, lead pay in the GoM at ECO is 850
In 2003…I can’t believe it has been 10 years now. I was making $330 bucks a day on the Laney Chouest. I was embarrassed to even tell anyone that asked. I would think that 850 or a 520 dollar a day increase over ten years is not too bad.

Of course I am on a rig now so it really doesn’t matter. Hopefully my supply boat days are gone forever. It was fun.

$850/day is about $155000/yr which is what a mate, 2AE or jr. DPO makes on some of the drilling rigs. So, comparing license requirements I’d say $850/day is reasonable for GOM work on an OSV.
That is master pay, not “captain” pay. That’s about the highest you can make in the GOM (at Chouest) and only one person per boat makes it. I think a master on a large OSV should earn more than a Jr. DPO…

As I stated before that’s a damn shame I know a company where chiefs make more than that…

First of all, you are getting old. Second of all, you are gay. Thirdly, you are gay too. You should not be embarrassed; it’s 2013.

I am glad you borught that up, because I was thinking the same thing when you sent me a picture of yourself playing in the snow. I know you are gay, but leave me out of it.

Sorry guys it was so gay I was asked to take it off.

It is not gay if you are underway. I hope I never see 850 a day again.

That is near $1000/day pay cut

Not all of us have made CM or M on a drillship nor need to. Where I am the office backs me up, I terrorize the client because they don’t like to follow their own policies or can’t read (haven’t figured out which yet) so I can slap them around and I have a good crew. Can not ask for much more and money is not everything.

“It is good to be King. PULL!” Mel Brooks as King Louis IV, History of the World Part II - 1978 or 79

That was a joke…to Lee. It is irrelevant to me. I could make one penny or a million dollars; all I get is lunch money anyway.

Much safer with the Boss controlling the bank. She gives you lunch money?

I may not be everything, but it is something.

Keeps me out of the casino.

Pay is irrelevant as long as you love what you do. Granted you can afford to live.

I dont know bud, I really like money. If the $$$ was in shipping cats asses to china… Guess what I would be doing. Just my opinion, money is like large breasted women, it makes everything better.
Sound reasoning, and I hope you are right. if it was only up to OMSA the Jones act would be a sure thing for ages to come but since they only play an advisory / lobbyist role and Congress and Senate are the ones to enact or repeal Acts such as the Jones Act, room for speculation exists. To think that politicians (such as McCain and Reid) have given up on their quest to repeal the JA, and that they won’t use the $80K salaries of unskilled labor (ABs & QMEDS) as a springboard is underestimating them.
Everyone should remain as upwardly mobile, both in position and financial status, as their ambition allows.
Unskilled labor? You could make an argument against ABs, but a proper QMED would definitely not fall into that category. Common skilled labor titles include (but are not limited to) construction worker, plumber, electrician, mechanic, mason, commercial driver, carpenter, technician, etc. The unskilled positions on the ship outside of the galley are OS, Wiper and Rigger. If you take the being away from home premium we all get, I think QMEDs are paid properly.

ECO is paying 970.00 a day in Brazil if you have a 6000. With a $ 20 a day bonus and seniority. All travel and hotel paid from home airport. Private driver picks up at airport and hotel. Might even get vacation out of it by staying in hotel for week at time. It happens.

Supposed to be getting a $45/day raise next paycheck for officers, and $35/day for the rest. About time Chouest try to play catch up with the other companies.

If you are thinking of going to Brazil just make sure you bring a lot of high blood pressure medicine because you will need it. Brazilian seaman does not no what they are doing… They bring the word LAZY to another LEVEL…

I did a few months on a research vessel down there. Probably heard “that’s not my job” 8 times a day. Let the Unlimited Master/ my mate dock the boat one day, oh my! But come on, it’s Brazil, I would work there for free.

Beeker, Who were you with? I’m with fugro right now in guanamara bay watching the trash float by. As for this company I don’t have a bad word to say about it, but wouldn’t mine a bit of a raise, but I still pay the bills and am fat and happy. Got a buddy working for chouest as 3rd mate (basic dp course) making well into 6xx/day. Lucky bastard.
As for the comments about pay raises because of the pay on a drill rig… Lets just say a dpo on a drill rig is making their company alot more money than a dpo on an osv!
