Yeah! What we really need is a whole new bash KP brouha again. I’m sick to death of anything to do with the miserable GoM!
Wow! Late to the party. I hate to see fellow mariners getting the boot. Hopefully it won’t last long.
I wish I knew more about the stock market, might be a good time to invest in the oil, however that works cause you all know it will go back up.
What they did sucks no if-and’s-or-buts about it. I just hope they don’t get any more “ideas” like cutting the health care down to one of those shit plans.
You can bet it was some dipshit bean counter that sold that pile of crap to em’
Bottom line I hope everybody makes it thru a ok.
I was going to stay away from this one but…
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions even if that opinion is that I am a IDIOTIC FOOL!!! So I will not knock it or argue with it, that is probably the best thing about the gCaptain forum.
So here is my opinion:
To all of you IDIOTIC FOOLS out there. You are a MEN in my book!! Some of us do put up with a little more bullshit that we care to. But you are out there putting up with it, Supporting your families and providing the best lifestyle possible within you license and/or abilities. Last time I checked that made you a Men!
So I will keep on been an IDIOTIC FOOL for as long as I can!!!
c.captain “I’m sick to death of anything to do with the miserable GoM!”
GREAT!!! You should live up to that comment and, never ever again burden anyone else with a thought or opinion about the GOM!!!
Chouest crews did take a pay cut. All those who were forced to go even time lost 25% of their income. The new cuts are just salt in the wound.
Less than 6 months ago there was a lot of heartache about ECO not offering even time. Now you want to bitch that they are forcing even time.
Sigh… Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.
As I’ve said a few times, if I knew all I had to do to get even time at ECO was devalue the price of oil by 60% in six months…well hell I would have started a tracking business in what little free time I had there!

The only thing I want to hear about KP is that they are closing it down.
That’s not just GoM. That’s every other job in America - which goes double if you’re blue collar. Until wages keep up with the Dow you’re not saying anything newsworthy.
You certainly did get a pay cut. You just cut your own pay when you declined to make contributions up to the ECO match in your 401k. Additionally, you paid more in taxes as a result of not contributing. Congratulations.
Going 28-14 to even time is a 16.7% pay cut. Or a 16.7% quality of life raise…

Try more like 25%
28/14 schedule has you working 243 days on average per year
14/14 schedule has you working 182 days on average per year
Also of note: The Safety Points Program was closed down while employees still had points previously earned in there. The school doesn’t have any classes scheduled past the first week of April, so factor in that loss, plus the already ranted about 3% not contributed to our 401k plans.
The shit sandwich photo is about right…except it’s still better than what they serve on the Brazilian boats!
Hmm. Lets briefly discuss the ineptitude of unions. First they want money from me which is a joke. Second they protect the jobs of people who won’t or can’t do them properly. “Seniority” is a BS concept. So you’ve been there longer but aren’t nearly as motivated or capable and you would deserve to keep a job over me? As it is now I work for a small company and one of the benefits is when I get a crappy deckhand one call to the office and he’s replaced. In a union this could not happen and that’s a joke.
Do your job. Do it well and generally there are no problems. If the work isn’t there and I need a paycut to avoid being unemployed, I’m absolutely ok with that. If the work still isn’t there and my boss has to stack the boat and lay off, it would suck, but I understand business. You can’t put out what isn’t coming in.
Why is everyone so surprised? It’s the oilfield. It’s cyclical. My first 15 years sailing was mostly in the oilfield and saw several cycles. The worst being the early to mid '80s. My wages and benefits were gradually cut to over 50%. We could tell when a job was about to finish up when the blanket piss tests were conducted and then the firings for miniscule reasons. After that, I made the move to the “dark side” and started sailing SIU tugs. I was burdened with $300 a year dues.(I was paying $1000 a year for insurance at my last oilfield company.) The OS on the tugs, with OT, made more than I made as CE on a mudboat.
I noticed in the late '90s as things were picking up, some of the oilfield companies were paying per diem in lieu of raises. Less painful to cut wages if it cycled down again.

Which union did you work for that would not let you get rid of a crappy deckhand? Name of union, company contract and year please or else I call BS.

Please tell us the union you were working for and the company contracted with that did not let you move out a crappy deckhand or else I call BS on your statement.

So says the guy who owes his livelihood to the place. Not to be critical, but I do find it interesting the love/hate relationship from those that attended KP.

All Union shit aside, Mariners at ECO got a pay cut. Don’t try and say otherwise.
If that’s what it takes to avoid laying people off, or more cuts are needed (equal time, travel), it’s still better than layoffs for everyone, although I can’t see any reasonable owner doing this retroactively. Decide not to match the next year fine, but not paying your people what you agreed to pay them is pure bullshit.
Can you actually imagine them eventually saying oh yeah now things are great, here’s the match back for everyone!
But I have to ask, are they still hiring people too?

YEAH SURE!..you wish! Never gonna quit criticizing Joe Boss here and always gonna enjoy giving people fits of apoplexy. Y’all just love “The Man” so much that it takes a person like me to give balance to the pack of sycophants all pounding the Koolaid…

It is interesting that most of the KP grads I run across have a right wing or libertarian leaning towards no government. This is in spite of the fact they were educated sucking on the government boob. Therefore they can’t be that bright and the education there that great or else there would not be that dichotomy. Unlike many I never thought a KP’er was much competition job wise. I have met a few excellent ones and some excellent hawsepipers. You take 'em where you can find 'em. By the way, I do NOT consider a hawsepiper to be a limited mariner. Limited mariner is one who may become a hawsepiper if they stick with it. The main reason ECO and others can do as they wish now is because the OMSA has thru the USCG created a low barrier for entry. There are plenty out there and more on the way. A limited license is the equivalent of a high school graduate now. Easily replaced day labor as soon as things pick up in a year or two and no where else to go if the industry doesn’t bounce back. Walmart doesn’t need limited DP masters but the limited chiefs might be able to change oil and tires. The bright spot is the wages will be so low they’ll qualify for food stamps ! Cheers !
