I’ve checked the forums and have looked through the 46CFR’s and I can’t find the regulation for carrying the CFR’s on board. Specifically if we can carry an electronic version on board (cd, Memory stick etc.) instead of the paper copies. I’m on a 500 GT 298ft vessel and I know we need them on board however the paper copies are expensive. If anyone can help it would be appreciated especially with a CFR location #.
What you also need and I’ve never seen on board is a copy of 46 US Code. That’s the actual law and trumps all else. I carry an electronic copy of the USC along with the CFRs, NVICs, Policy Letters, etc.

I always make sure to carry plenty of lube on-board.

I need to add some credit where credit is due. I have referenced a blog post by Capt Brucato in the past, I don’t have the link readily available, but he did a very nice job of outlining how to correct required publications without the cut and paste BS that we have done for many years.
Also, I am a big fan of the computer. I type faster than I can write and if I can do it on the computer, that’s where it’s going to be done. Of all the books, documentation, or guidance I have searched for on-line, the only item I was unable to find was the 1983(?) Nautical Almanac for use in preparing for exams (which I had a hard copy of and scanned, so I have a digital copy of that as well).
The point I’m trying to make is, ask the right question. It’s rarely a matter of, “Does this exist on-line”, it’s a matter of, “Where am I going to find it”.
Thanks Cal, I would be nice to know how to correct pubs without the cut and paste method. If you locate it or get it from Capt. Brucato please let us know. Thanks again.
I know that the Sight Reduction Tables are available on NGA’s website, but is the annual Nautical Almanac available anywhere online?

Nobody answered the original question.
Where is it required that you carry CFRs onboard?
There is no statutory requirement to carry the CFRs unless the Safety Managent System (ISM Manual) requires it.
The CFRs state which navigational documents, charts, and publications you must carry but the IMO dictates which publications must be carried for various ship types sailing internationally.
I’ve searched and searched for some guidance on which CFRs to carry over the years. Now that the company is providing us with electronic versions of what the ISM Dept. says we should have and that the internet is a little more accessible onboard I’ve not worried as much.
We still get some hard copy IMO pubs that aren’t part of the electronic library. Every boat I’ve worked or visited will have something more or something less. I’ve also noticed that the price tag on anything with an IMO logo on it is pretty steep. Then there are the supplements, amendments and other changes that need to be kept up to date. But a while back I did find a piece on some IMO requirements here http://www.imo.org/Publications/SupplementsAndCDs/Documents/carriageonboard.pdf
