It’s hard to list all of the circumstances, so I’ll list a few factors and see what you guys think. Where would YOU go from here and why? Here’s the quick down and dirty: 48 years old, broken sea time, STCW and TWIC current, I’d like to get away from tug boats and get a regular rotation job, I’d like to maximize my license for it’s income potential and plan license advancement for, let’s say, the next 10 years. Thanks for any input, thoughts, ideas!

If you qualify for chief osv then get that and go work in the gulf. Otherwise you will probably have to be a qmed, though I guess the second engineer on an osv can be an assistant as long as the other guy is a chief. I can’t say for sure the companies will do that, they may want two chiefs.
Engineering license experts, does he qualify for chief osv with either of his two licenses?
I popped over to the CG website and grabbed this off of a checklist:
Chief Engineer (OSV)
Option 1:
Service Requirements from valid DDE:
(Mariner holds valid endorsement as
DDE). He/she may have the MMC endorsed for service as Chief Engineer of
OSVs of not more than 3,000 GT within any current HP limitations (1,000,
4,000 or Unlimited HP) (No additional training, assessment, or exams
required).
If I understood the checklist correctly, I pretty much apply for this, pay a couple bucks and rock and roll with a C/E of OSV 3,000 GT, unlimited HP…
Thats the way I read that also. Get on that and get down to the gulf asap. Be ready for much more paperwork and strict adherence to regulations than anything you have seen on tugs…

Is there, and where, is a good source to review those regs on OSV paperwork, engineer side? LOL I’ll google it, check CG site on various categories. I like to be aware of what’s ahead even if I have to learn as I go… Thanks Capt. Phoenix!
