Wool watch cap sitting on top of a USCG man’s head after being kicked from firing an 8 gauge shotgun in Labrador. 1946 I think… I inherited that cap which he wore in the maritime service on ships in the NA in WW II and later in the USCG. It was NOT a cap to be warm in mild weather as it was 100% wool from apparently non-virgin sheep. Itched like hell unless it was super cold

We always called those sock hats when I was growing up in the Midwest. Later it was a watch cap when I was in the Navy. I always thought a beanie had a propeller on the top.
