I thought it had to do with the stcw endorsement, and certain classes will allow you to obtain proper stcw. But I dont remember.

The classes were originally required to comply with mandated STCW training but since they were never put in the CFR the NMC can’t require them anymore.
Thanks for that. I thought I heard something about some classes would be required to advance from chief mate to master, and that it wouldn’t be just sea time anymore.

I don’t know if there will be classes to go from chief mate to master or not. It used to be classes were required to move to management level (cm or master) but since they aren’t in the CFR the NMC was told they couldn’t require them anymore.
Yeah, I did the courses, but I had talked to someone at mitags recently and there where talks about requirements for those classes again, just dont remember what was being pushed or not. I think if they brought back the classes then they should make the tests serious and then that would be your cm/master test. Or you could opt to go to an rec and test without classes, give an option, classes with a test or the 9 in the rec. I think some people will choose either or.

I’m in favor of education and increasing the knowledge base of licensed mariners, regardless of if it is useful on the ship you run (the license isn’t for an OSV or drill ship, it is for any motor vessel). My problem is I have heard too many horror stories of classes that aren’t taught worth a shit so no one actually learns anything. If the USCG had better quality control of the schools I would be in favor of requiring classes.
Does anyone remember offhand where I can find the old SNPRM? (I hate the search function on the mobile app…)

No, I can’t say anything until the rule publishes.[/QUOTE]
Can you say whether the current assessments will still be valid? I don’t want to do a whole assessment package I will just have to throw away and redo.

The requirement for assessments exists now, and all of our rulemaking proposals retained it. We are aware that many are in process on the existing assessments, and if any changes are made, a reasonable transition period would be provided, January 1, 2017 seems the most likely as it is also the date for full implementation of the 2010 STCW.

That’s good to know. Thank you.
