Now THAT touched my soul or whatever it is inside of us that’s primeval and adventurous.
I’m thinking of the time my very best dog, a male collie I named Travis, and I were walking across my snow filled pasture heading for home, it was early February, before the turn of the Century. There was little light still in the western sky when we heard it echoing down the canyon. A wolf howl pierced the quiet surroundings. Travis stopped in his tracks, turned around and walked away from me, oh, about 20 feet, stopped again, faced the canyon and let out a wondrous and long howl. It was answered. A little time past, there were no more howls, Travis turned around, looked at me for several seconds, I said not a word, directly he came back to me on a little trot. I petted him and he and I made our way back to the warmth of our log cabin.
I often wonder what they said to each other, for surly they communicated.

A good read.
Thanks.

Thanks Tugs, this guy was a 110# white factored Blue Merle Collie. He was a herder, back then we had cattle. Yes, he was a friend and loyal companion.
Great looking merle. In one of your recent photos I noticed a tri-color in the background. I’ve got a couple also, a female tri and a male sable.

That’s nice ~
Oh yea, I got a male Tri, we bonded early.

Today the pack is a Tri (now fully grown), a female Sable (a rescue collie), and another Blue Merle:

You can hardly see the Merle in the above picture, he’s a real split face, one blue eye, one brown.

NIce looking pal you got there S-n-G
This is my hound dog, he likes to go out on the boat with me. I fish and he lays around and sleeps. Every once in a while he will open one eye and check on me, then back of to snoozing again. Couldn’t really ask for a better friend. He likes it though, I couldn’t keep him off the boat if I even wanted to.

Wonderful, Thanks, Chief
We couldn’t be without our pals, eh Chief.
For my 50th birthday, I thought I was getting a rat terrier. Turns out she’s a redfish terrier. She’ll swim in a 50 degree winter surf to assist me landing a bull red. Many squirrels have met their demise in my front yard also.
NEAT pictures - Thanks injunear - that’s one spunky doggie you got. You live in the perfect setting for such fishing, now you have a great companion too.
She likes to play fetch also.:D:

Oh my goodness - perfectly balanced too - that’s some pal you got there.
A while back I was asked this asinine question. What is it about your dogs? My reply, I’ll tell you what it is about your question, asking a question like that you are unable to understand my answer.
Concerning the wolf call and my dog Travis, I know some very experienced woodsmen and hunters here in Montana. All of these men mentioned there are only two possibilities. The first being the wolf was a female who lost her mate and is looking for another. The other, the wolf is a male and Travis was telling the wolf that he’s too close to his territory so best move on, thus no further howls. One man told me that Travis’s long howl indicates the second possibility was most likely the case.
I sometimes wonder what I would have done if Travis decided to leave, would I let him go without trying to call him back? Doubtful as I knew his life would be tragic. Fortunately this didn’t happened but during those few seconds, when he turned and looked at me, those thoughts were going through my head.
The Call of the Wild, eh!
I enjoy sharing pictures of our Dogs, I encourage forum members to do likewise. This is Travis successor, not as physically large as Travis but surly as protective. Travis was half Wolf and Collie, and totally a loyal pack member. He and I were best Buds, as is Bandit. Travis was going to be killed when I rescued him. He was only a pup.
