Assistant Engineer (Limited)

Good day shipmates!

Question: I currently have a DDE Unlimited and also 3rd A/E Unlimited. I wish to acquire Assistant Engineer (Limited) endorsement. If I request it from the CG, will I have to test for it or will they just grant it to me? I’ve reached out and asked the CG and the only thing was said is that i would have to apply for it and it would be up to the evaluator. Can’t give me a straight answer!

Thanks again!

They will grant it to you. It is the same exam and considered an equivalent endorsement. At least they used to…

2AE = CE Limited Near Coastal
1AE = CE Oceans

The CE NC has Tonnage and Route restrictions.

The CE O has Tonnage restrictions.

One or the other can have HP restrictions based on your time on sub 4,000 HP vessels.

I believe if you have 1440 days in the engine room,360 as a licensed officer and 720 as QMED you can ask for CE OSV.

These are all National Endorsements.

Did you know that you cannot sail on an OSV greater that 1600 tons with a CE Unlimited?

Why? Your 3rd AE is a superior license. You can do everything an AE Limited can do, and more. Why waste your time and NMCs asking for what you already have?

AE(L) is the same set of tests as DDE unlimited. They will grant it to you ( they granted it to me a while ago). But why bother ? Your 3AE license is already bigger than AEL.

Why? That’s like a 3rd Mate Unlimited requesting a 1,600 ton Mate license. They’ll probably deny the request because there’s no reason to have it and you wasted the application fee.
