Anybody here work for WHOI, HYLINE, or Steamship Authority?

As the title says- Im looking to get out of the GOM and be way closer to home. I have my eye on the 3 companies stated above and was just wondering in general how far at the bottom of the food chain I would have to start at each of them. It wouldn’t hurt to get a private message and hear what I would have to do to land employment and hear about pay/ job satisfaction. After doing some research, I guess the steamship authority is union (teamsters local 59) and who would I talk to about getting in line etc… What is the schedule like on the WHOI boats?

Thanks guys

Who’s has no real schedule, steamship you will probably need to ride as an AB to get your trips for pilotage. Hyline I have no real info on.

Its probably not too hard to get a seasonal job at Hyline because it doesn’t pay anything. The others are very modest pay, but very difficult to break into.

I used to work for HyLine right after I got out of school. Send me any questions you have.

If the ferries are doing any hiring, it will be April/May/June. Get an application in now and at least get in line.

There’s no real rotation on research boats (WHOI). You will probably hire into the pool and they will call you if they need a relief guy. Unless they hire you permanent (rare) it’s relief only.

Also, be prepared for longer trips when you do get them, can be up to four months. You sign a contract.
