Dark fleet again…
Then did a runner being towed by 2 tug boats ( where did they come from?)
Malaysia gov have arrested the ship
All just north of Pedra Branca where they do the ship to ship transfers
Was accident cover for a different issue?
IMHO blaming AIS spoofing for the collision is a nonsense. Hafnia had at least two radars which were ARPA fitted and their officers had all STCW required ARPA traning certificates. One does not need AIS data from 300+ loa tanker to avoid collision in the existing traffic environment and conditions. There must be other reason for this collision.
Reports say it happened before 6am. Alarm was raised with authorities at 0615 local.
When I looked at Marinetraffic that day, the only Ceres 1 showing was anchored - in Lanshan 2500nm away.
I agreee with radar comments above.
Love to know what playback on Hafnia Nile’s ECDIS & VDR shows…
PS> My guess would have been tugs from Batam, or the anchorage off South Johor coast,
Unless the tug just happened to be around and spotted a salvage opportunity (LOF).
The profesor
The National University of Singapore (NUS) law faculty’s Emeritus Professor Robert Beckman said AIS spoofing may have contributed to Ceres I colliding with the Hafnia Nile.
Had the professor instead said something like “The spoofing is likely to have been been a significant factor in the collision” than perhaps one might reasonably infer blame.
The statement the professor actually made leaves open the possibility of other contributing factors and that the spoofing may not have contributed at all.
The Professor of law is entitled to have an opinion , so are master mariners with decades of experience navigating ships and utilising effective anticollision measures before ARPA and long before AIS have become available and compulsory tools on navigation bridges.
I am 100% sure You Sir are one of them and given the con of Hafnia under described circumstances, You would have avoided collision with Ceres I using as your tool…(You know what) and with your eyes closed. I can bet on it.
