AMO/MEBA circling MMP? APL news

Not true.

Upon receiving pledge cards from MEBA, certain mates onboard an ATC ship reached out to MMP. OSG management had absolutely nothing to do with it and is continuing to fight it. The consensus among the mates who reached out to MMP was that “if we’re going to unionize, we should unionize with a deck officers’ union” (aka MMP). During the election, an overwhelming majority of the LDOs at both ATC and OSG echoed that sentiment. It all comes down to the A book. Everyone wants that A book more than MEBA’s pension or AMO’s online job board.

A book is going to be useless if MMP doesn’t win the arbitration against APL. There’s only so many box boat jobs that has better contract than OSG. With 200 A books already in the union and adding 90+ more everyone is going to be fighting for scraps or aging their card 10-11 months which at the point you’re making less money than just staying permanent at OSG.

It also puts the non-tanker guys at a disadvantage because not everyone has/wants a PIC, so those folks will have lateral freedom. I know more than a handful of OSG guys who hate the culture there which forever reason they say makes most masters and chief mates complete out of control assholes and seem more than happy with the idea of taking breaks here and there to work off the board on something else.

Atleast it won’t happen in the next four years if Trump doesn’t appoint another member to the NRLB.

Thank you for the clarification, my comment has been edited.

Do all OSG mates regardless of whether they were hired by OSG after the union vote get A book status?
2- c/m, 2- 2m, 4- 3m per ship is 6 A books per ship . OSG has 17 ships ? 102 A books.
Is this going before the membership for a vote or has it already been decided?

Is MMP giving OSG the MMP tanker contract? Isn’t it a lot lower than OSG’s current wages?

I think MMP was looking the wrong way and got distracted by OSG and missed the ball on APL. But I’ll never not be confused as to why some certain individuals are so ready to play tough with some companies and soft with others. I will never stop being baffled.

Exactly. Sucks for the newbies but hasn’t that always been mantra ? Hold on to your permanent job if you got it! It could be a rough ride!

How many total billets are there going to be after Patriot is gone! (Gone to ROS) 300 A books is a lot

Why would a union want to keep it contracts a secret - unless they are such crap as to be embarrassing?

Why wouldn’t a union want to brag about what a great job it’s doing for its members?

Why wouldn’t a union with high wages want members of other unions demanding “me to”?

Only employers benefit from keeping contracts secret.

These days there is no such thing as a secret. Anyone that wants info and is willing to work at getting it, will eventually find it. But why should they have to?

NLRB or someone should require that all union contracts are posted on a website for the entire World to see.

Transparency and accurate info benefit workers, people thinking of entering the workforce, and the public.

Mates employed by OSG/ATC at time of contract ratification will receive an A book.

Already been decided unless the union leadership backtracks their promises; to this point there has been no indication at all of such backtracking.

Will not be the same as other mmp tanker contacts.

This is all…to the best of my knowledge.

As others mentioned, with the current administration a lot is left to be desired with the status of the NLRB; who knows how long this process will take. Already been over a year.

APL thing doesn’t seem like it’s a done deal yet. Who knows how the AFL-CIO will see that whole ordeal.

Yeah it will be interesting because from my understanding it’s an “Osprey” contract which has always been AMO. Will the AFL-CIO consider this as an attempt at MMP to take an AMO contract? What’s the MMP argument? That it is not Osprey? And instead an MSP APL contract? But these ships won’t have MSP right?
There has been APL managed Osprey vessels in the past with AMO crew simultaneously with APL managed and crewed MMP containerships.
Like who gets what? Is MMP only entitled to MSP or all ships but then what is AMO entitled to only Osprey ships on gov contracts or on certain runs? Anyone know the details for each argument is?

While the new APL possible ships ( I say that because it hasn’t actually happened yet) going to AMO/ MEBA isn’t good for MMP, it has nothing to do with the 10 currently manned by MMP/MEBA/SIU/MFOW/SUP. 9 of 10 are MSP. All of them pay the same. On principle if MMP doesn’t ‘win’ title 20 hearing, it sucks. But the only real damaging thing going on is the passthru expiration , which are the jobs currently filled by MMP on 4 express ships. Some of those 4 are already filled by MEBA mates. The more damaging thing is the Army/Airforce LMSRs going to MARAD ROS. That hurts everybody. MMP loses multiple billets, MEBA loses rotary jobs, unlicensed unions lose a lot of jobs, and everybody gets pay cuts who even still has a job. ROS manning is I believe 10 crew.

MSC contract awards ‘should’ come out by end of month. While this has nothing to do with MEBA/AMO agreement, it will really show where all the chips fall after PCS mariners definitely lose jobs on 6 or 7 LMSRs being transferred to MARAD RRF.

PASHA (with MMP/MEBA) also bid on govt contracts. We shall see….

I know PASHA was bidding for the Cape H’s and I really hope they get them. Patriot hasn’t been that good to any RRF vessels. Is patriot bidding for any new ones? Was hearing T-AGS for awhile.

YES, PCS bidding on a lot of stuff, including TAGS/TAGOS. I personally don’t think PCS is any better or worse at RRF babysitting than anybody else. Having said that, it’s not an easy thing to do…. Ancient ships, virtually no OT budget, minimal manning, terrible pay, sometimes home port places like Beaumont makes it very hard to fill billets. There has been a good bump since JULY 2024, but prior to that, MARAD CM ROS made about $12k gross per month and 2 for 30 vacation. At 6 mos of sailing CM you would need to make 24k/month. I’d say about the worst paying CM jobs at that time grossed about 30k a month, clearly not favorable monetary environment for filling those jobs unless you can find the exact right person. Those specific billets sometimes go unfilled for months.
I can say that I was underwhelmed by MATSON vessel superintendent handling of CAPE Hs at their end. HOWEVER, maybe they just no longer cared because they just didn’t want to deal with them anymore and were already to PCS, anyway. It’s not like MNC needs the headache of govt ships to turn a profit.

Wow I hope PCS do get those ships then. Would help out the LMSR folks who needs to eventually get on one. All those are getting decided the end of this month?

It was supposed to be decided weeks ago, but the powers that be at either DOT or DOD are mulling over (additionally) handing out big contracts.

I hope Keystone bid on those ships. A lot of MEBA mates are wanting more work and contracts. MEBA needs more top to bottom government contracts that are not ROS most of the time. It would also be great for the engineers from the LSMRs. Bottom line, whomever wins those, it will huge.

If DOD wants those engineers from LMSR fleet to keep going I do hope MEBA/MMP gets them and not AMO.

Keep going? What does that mean?

Or a MEBA/MEBA (top to bottom) company of course
