I hold a Mate of Towing Veissels, as well as a 100 ton master. Can i apply for 200 ton mate and receive it or do i still need an additional class?
Reason im asking is because i held my mate of towing first, then just applied for 100 ton master with no further exam and was granted it. Just curious if I could just apply for 200 ton mate and it be granted as well?
I will be sitting for 500 Master by end of year, but in the meantime my company pays more for holding higher tonnage, mate or master, so if theres a shortcut to achieve it in the meantime im all for it. Anyone familiar?
End of the year is coming pretty fast by the time the CG acts on anything you do.
@Mbadeaux I agree with @ChemicalTanker by the time you get approved to test you will be approved to test for 500 ton. The more you apply for the more chance of getting something bounced back from the Coast Guard.
Im sending in for additional STCW endorsements right now, so thats i was wondering if i was able to apply for that as while since im submitting anyway
@Mbadeaux you can always throw it on the application and if they want to give you a test you can email them to drop the test or you can take it.
You have to test Fir 100 and 200 GRT endorsements the testing threshold is not mate v. master, it’s tonnage. So any 100 GRT mate or master tests to go to 200 GRT mate or master. There is no course required but you could take one instead of the test at an REC.
As far as 500 GRT, even if you don’t go for STCW you are still going to need to take Basic and Advanced Firefighting.
Okay thanks for the answer. I asked and was given the 100 ton master without doing anything but asking, beings i alrealdy held my Mate of Towing. Just was wondering if the 200 mate was able to obtain in the same fashion because why not. But thanks for clearing that up. As far as the 500 i have everything but 30 days of seatime left to go so just gonna apply to test for 500 after next month and not worry about the 200 mate. Just wouldve done it for a convience and pay reasoning. Thanks for the help
Good luck. Just be aware you need firefighting courses for 500 Tons. But maybe apply and see what they say, you’ll then have 90 days to get the courses. That will make sure you don’t spend time and $$ on courses until you know everything else is good.
Years ago, I sat for first class pilotage when I held a Master 100 ton Near Coastal. When they printed the endorsement, they gave me Master 100 ton NC and First Class Pilotage for 100 tons I think. I then questioned it because someone I had worked with had the same pilotage route and he had a 250 ton Master Near Coastal with a 250 Ton Pilotage.
I was then given a Master 200 ton Near Coastal with a 200 ton First Class Pilotage with no additional testing.
You never know…
Yeah i have advanced fire, medical care provider, oicnw, all the bells and whistles last thing is the remaining sea time then testing
