If you tested for MATE 500 or 1600 after January 31, 2002, No. If you tested before then, yes.
There is no crossover exam, but if you took a Mate 500 or Mate 1600 exam after 2/1/02, you don’t have to test (except (maybe) for rules).
This is what I thought, but when I upgraded in 2010 to 1600 master/3rd mate they made me take the 3rd mate exam and i tested for 1600 mate in 2004. The 3rd mate test was also considerably harder than the 1600 mate tests I remember taking.

Mr. JD, please if you dont mind one more question. I have an STCW endorsement as Master 1600 GRT upon oceans (STCW II/2) issued AFTER 1997. So I read in NVIC 12-14 enclosure 1, paragraph 2.5.B the following: Assessments are not required if the mariner holds or has previously held an STCW endorsement as Master (STCW II/2) valid on vessels of 500 GT or more other than Offshore Supply Vessels issued after 1997. This will apply regardless of when or how the mariner obtained their endorsement. So I interpret that as I can be approved to test for 3rd mate AGT & issued an OICNW endorsement WITHOUT having to do any of the assessments as set forth by the STCW code A-II/1, which is laid out in NVIC 12/14. Can you confirm? How could it be interpreted any different?? Sounds pretty straight forward to me.

I got my mates a year Ago. So 2014. I’m hoping they where the same test! I guess I’ll find out when I apply for the license upgrade

Did they make you take the 3M exam or the 1600 ton master exam? How many tests total did you take?
Yes. It’s the Mate 1600 exam that determines. The reason is that the Mate 500, Mate 1600, 3rd Mate and 2nd Mate exams were made the same on 2/1/02. If you did not take that exam, there are required subjects for 3rd Mate (per 46 CFR 11.910) that were not on any exams you have taken previously (these subjects were formerly for unlimited licenses only)…
Do anyone know if this is still true?

He has said in other threads that they removed the requirement for anyone with II/2 to do the Mate assessments since they are qualified to sign them.

Yes, it’s still true.

Wait, so is that just for the 3/2 Mate upgrade process or does it apply for the Chief Mate/Master AGT as well?? I’m going to kick myself if I did all these assessments for no reason and held at 2nd mate this long when I could have sat long ago.

thread, please do the honorable thing.

The new assessment package marks certain assessments as unnecessary if you hold a Master 3000 tons. If you do the old assessments you have to do them all.

I’m not going to bother to even try to explain the difference between assessments for an STCW endorsement and exams for a national endorsement (license)…

His question had nothing to do with exams, it was about assessments.

Since mariners holding Master 3000 (II/2) are no longer required to do the OICNW assessments to upgrade to 3M he was asking if they still need to do the CM/M assessments to go to Chief Mate Unlimited. I said the following:
