1600 Master's Crossover Exam!

I am upgrading to 2/M Unlimited in January and also going to test for the 1600 Master’s, what is the best way to prepare for it? Buy all the Murphy books? Lapware? Thanks for you help!

Check out this thread for similar discussion.

Best of luck!

I just got my 1600 masters back in Feb. I used the Hawsepipe.net disc. The free stability course on the site was invaluable as well as the ability on the disc to use key words to work on weak areas of study.

The Murphy Books are excellent ( I did not use Lapware But I’ve heard it is good).

Another REALLY good source that is free is www.seasources.net If you have internet access you can utilize everything via the web & it doesn’t cost a cent; or if you don’t have good consistent access you can download all the info and you don’t need to be connected to use it but they charge a fee for the download.

10 Talents turned me on to seasources…I really like it but I have found 1 rules question that had an incorrect answer…

Is anyone going to be selling their Murphy books in the near future?

What’s the question, and the wrong answer? Just curious. Aren’t they using the test pool questions?

Do you remember which question had the wrong answer? I’m curious to know as well.

Please inform me as to which answers you saw as incorrect on the site.

The Coast Guard question pool is continuously updated, often as a result of a successful protest. It uis not uncommon that a question is changed in the pool and some time elapses before the assorted publications and other services using the pool catch up.

Yep, I sure will when I find it again…there are over 40 quizes on rules (combined)
Great site …

I have been using Hawsepipe.net software and I found several incorrect rules questions as well.

Okay, I finally found it…
It’s quiz # 18, question 18, under rules of the road (combined)

The question reads:

At night a vessel displaying the lights illustrated in diagram 82 is __________?

A) Sailing

B)Fishing

C)A pilot boat

D)Anchored

I apologize, I tried to put in a diagram but it wouldn't stay in the proper format..

The answer shows up as ( B)fishing…Which at first glance makes sense ,red over white fishing at night…except there is a problem with that upper white light…I’m taking that for a masthead light, what else could it be?..There are 5 vessels that never show mast head lights…

Not under command
Fishing
sailing
pilot
vessel being towed

So unless that upper light is something else I think the diagram is wrong…Under rule 26 (e)A vessel when not engaged in fishing shall not exhibit the lights or shapes prescribed in this Rule, but only those prescribed for a vessel of her length,…which to me means masthead lights…or power driven vessel…which would require masthead lights…Either one or the other, but not both…

My diagram 82 (from the CG) on Hawspipe software shows only red over white and a red lower left. No masthead light. May be a typo.

That would explain it…It’s just the wrong diagram…thanks RJB

I have been all over seasources site and it’s one of the best I have seen…

Sorry it took me so long to get back in here to see the replies. It looks like you are correct about that diagram being labeled incorrectly. I’ll get it changed shortly. Meanwhile, try the new testing site: http://betabox.seasources.net/ It has a lot more features and error reporting is not only instant but targets the question being reported.

how much for access to sea sources? didn’t see it posted in my 2 second glance…

Access on the net is FREE. If you want to download the software it was $80 or so. With the download you can save your test history. Maybe some other tips Steve could give you.
