The master going down with his ship is pure Hollywood and not based on any real tradition (except maybe for the Imperial Japanese Navy in WWII)
What is true tradition and (I believe) law is that the master remains aboard his vessel until ever person who be safely taken off is off. What is the unfortunate reality is that waiting to ensure that all persons are safe means the chances of getting off safely themselves is significantly reduced. Hence why many masters did in fact end up becoming fatalities themselves.

Gee… do I fill out a near miss, or a NCR? If I was “That much sooner” It would’ve been a non incident! OH yeah, I went down with the ship… Yippee. No paperwork!

Well it talks about the “captain” going down with the ship. It doesn’t specify wether this individual is the 2nd-5th captain. It doesn’t say the Master goes down with the ship. These days we have academy kids who get a free 1600 Master with their 2nd upgrade and think of themselves as “captains”. What stops the real master from giving that kid a field promotion and letting him go down with the ship. So you gotta fill out some paperwork but you can blame everything on the kid. Dead men tell no tales.
