Women in Shipping

A woman will be leading Maersk Supply Ships, one of the world’s leading Offshore vessel owners/operators with a young and diversified fleet:

She comes from being CEO of Svitzer, one of the world’s leading tug boat companies, with operations worldwide.

Bugge,

You posted this like it should be news-worthy that a woman was chosen to lead an OSV division. I don’t find that strange at all. What I do note, is while she may be a viable business woman, she doesn’t have any experience at sea. Here is her LinkedIn summary:

Overview:

• Extensive management experience in international and multi-cultural environments as well as strong theoretical foundation and analytical skill-set.

• Strong business acumen with proven capability of delivering stretched, pragmatic and visible results.

• Detailed knowledge of international logistics and supply chain manageement.

• High energy level with passion and initiative.

• Strong learning agility as well as good interpersonal skills and an ability to develop leaders and staff around me.

• International mindset from living, working and studying in Denmark, China, Spain, France, Germany and USA.

I don’t think anybody assumed that she had been working on tugs to be CEO of Svitzer, or on OSVs to do her new job as Chairwoman of MSS.
What is newsworthy is that a woman is even considered for the job in a very masculine dominated industry, like Towing, Salvage and Offshore shipping.

It is not entirely unheard of in Scandinavia, but I wouldn’t say it is so common as not to be newsworthy.

Again, I don’t find it newsworthy. As you say, the reason there aren’t many women at the top is because there aren’t that many women in the entire industry. This one obviously beat out all of the “masculine” candidates that had real shipboard experience because of her “proven capability of delivering stretched, pragmatic and visible results.” Blech!

How many CEOs in major towing companies have been on the tugs in your part of the woods??
Besides, the CEO of GM doesn’t need to have been on the floor assembling cars. He needs to have business acumen though.

Actually, quite a few of the US towing companies started out as family-owned enterprises that were started by… a towboat captain (of all things). Many remain family-owned, and therefore I can only assume that the leadership grew-up in the trade.

Yes that was the case with most companies, both in towing, shipping and many other industries. Some are still family owned, but those who have grown big are mostly run by professional managers, or by family members who have never been at sea, or “on the floor”.

PS> In fact Maersk is still a family owned company, as are many large shipping companies in Europe and in Asia.

I take it you’ve never heard of Thea Foss.

Good example, but does she come in multiples?
I did not say that women in high position in towing and shipping doesn’t exist, only that it is not common.

I don’t know if Mary Barra has worked on the assembly line for GM but she is a woman last I checked.

No, but experience in the automotive industry is helpful

P.S. The CEO of GM isn’t a he, her name is Marry Barra, and while she may never have worked as an assembly line worker, she began her career with GM at age 18 as a CO-Op student, then after receiving an electrical engineering degree from the GM institute and later an MBA from Stanford in 1990.

Since then she has held a variety of engineering and administrative positions with in GM, including managing an assembly plant.

And while you may find is strange and news worthy that a female would hold such a position, I, like Portofdc, don’t find it strange at all.

No matter how much you would like to prove me wrong on anything and everything, here is some facts about women CEOs:

And about the most influential women in shipping:

But of course we shouldn’t let facts get in the way of a good argument about nothing.

I maintain that a female CEO in a MAJOR towing company operating on all continents, except maybe Antarctica, is unusual.
When the same women also become Chairwomen in one of the world’s leading Offshore shipping company, it is newsworthy.

That’s your opinion and you’re certainly entitled to it, but no matter how much it bothers you, everyone else is equally entitled to their opinion.

I (and obviously others) don’t find it particularly shocking that a female would be promoted to a senior management position.

FTR you were wrong, you thought Mary Barra was a male, she is not.

What’s more rare than a female CEO of a towing company? Getting a Norwegian to admit he was wrong.

I did not find it “shocking”, but unusual that a female is given such a position in a male dominated industry like the towing and offshore marine industries.
But I admit that I didn’t know that GM had a female CEO. Not that it made any difference to the point I was making. I could have used Ford, Nissan, GE, or any other major manufacturing company as an example.

You are right on the first, but wrong on the second. (See above)

Can’t wait for your next attempt to scare me away. It is likely to be just as silly and futile as your earlier attempts.

Actually I’m glad you keep posting, particularly on political issues, how great China is, how America needs to step aside and let the rest of the world be in charge, etc. It keeps in the forefront of the minds of the readers of this forum (mostly American) what lies ahead if the socialist, globalist, anti-American types get into control. Please keep it up all the way until the 2020 election.

On that note, Reuters has a story today how China is putting millions of Muslims into concentration camps. I look forward to you posting that link in your “Understanding China” propaganda thread and then schooling all us on how it’s just “growing pains” or how “the motherland” is just reclaiming her rightful place… Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Don’t want to “scare” you away.

You’re way to amusing.

Thanks for the compliment, which I’ll assume that was meant as.
Looks like I’m developing a fan club here, lead by c.captain.

Clowns always have fans. (Of course that doesn’t mean we take them seriously.)
