A windsock is a simple instrument that hangs near high-altitude bridges and viaducts. Many know that you can tell what the wind direction is from this, but far fewer people know that you can also read how hard the wind is blowing.
While waiting on weather for a rigmove in the Java Sea the Coona** Company man came up to the control room in the morning to check on the conditions.
He had a look at the windsock and declared:
