Will Trump repeal Jones Act?

Trump has used cheap foreign labor for his own benefit many times
. His elite Mar-a-Lago applied for foreign worker visas last Aug paying housekeepers just $10.17 an hour for 30 hours a week. Many conservatives support less regulation by principal and conservative blogs such as The Hill and The Daily Caller have called for the end of the Jones Act as have other Republicans in Congress. Should the American Maritime industry be worried?
Should the American Maritime industry be worried?
oh I am sure a new Merchant Marine Act of 2017 will protect American owned corporations from foreign competitors but all the protections for American seamen and shipyard workers are soon to be DEAD AND GONE FOREVER! We just threw it all away just like that.

the end will not some suddenly though, it will be a death by a thousand cuts where American mariners and shipyard workers will be bled white before it is through. First will be the end of US built ships for the coastwise trades, then will be maintaining US flags on vessels in those trades, then the OCS Lands Act will fall. All in the guise that to keep American jobs protected will be too costly in the depressed market. I can see every player today already calling their lobbyists to see how they can get everything they dreamed of before the 2018 elections where the Congress may well swing back to the Democrats because of how the Republicans always overreach when given a blank check.
No. If there was broad support for it on the congressional level it would have been gone by now. Remember your checks and balances lesson from civics.
Checks and balances? If you have President with an authoritarian bend, backed by a majority in both houses and a Supreme Court stacked with sympathizers to interpret the Constitution any which way required, what is holding him back?

The Fourth Estate? With Fox News as prime news source, dominated by like minded politicians, there isn’t much checks and no balanced views put forward.

Over pessimistic and simplified? Let us hope so.

Many voted for Trump because of his “protectionist” views and the desire to protect American workers. What makes you so sure he will turn his back on the Jones Act which exists for that very purpose?
What makes you so sure he will turn his back on the Jones Act which exists for that very purpose?
because he is a LYING SACK of SHIT! He has lied throughout his campaign and expect him to continue that predilection now that he is to become the “CRINGE” President

Tut tut sir, I’m afraid you are overreacting. He may be guilty of locker room talk (my female acquaintances assure me they have their very own version of this silly pastime) and of being prone to the use of hyperbole to drive home a point but please provide examples approaching the level of the egregious display of subterfuge and pathological fear of the truth demonstrated by his former opponent time and time again. (Sorry I had to mention her).

wrong!

own version of this silly pastime)

Perhaps we move in different circles. I guess the beach crowd around here sports a thicker skin and can hold their own (no pun intended, honest).
In any case, can we be thankful the sky didn’t fall and the stock market didn’t crash as predicted?

Don’t mind me, I’m just being presidential. (I know what men say in locker-rooms, because usually there’s no women’s locker-room where I work. I also know what women say in locker rooms, cause I R 1. its mostly trying to sell each other essential oils, or asking hilariously personal sex questions like they aren’t in public.) But that’s not the point: the upside of all this is that I now have the license to interupt rudely and say WRONG! at random intervals. Thank you, The Donald, for unleashing the rude 3-year-old in all of us. I’m free at last.

Trump doesn’t give one shit about American workers. He’s full of shit. He said what he said to get elected…the end. He appealed to the poorly educated with promises of jobs in coal mines and factories…Newsflash: those jobs are gone forever. And it’s not Democrats or trade deals that killed them… it’s technology and the internet. He will be just as cozy with Wall Street as anyone else in the Oval Office has been. Voters are naive if they think he will fulfill ANY of his campaign promises. He is a total fraud. And he pulled off the biggest scam in history. there will be no border wall. There will be no mass deportations. It would be hard for him to beat Obama’s record… He deported more illegals than any President. There will be more sweet tax deals for his golfing buddies and gold plated toilet seats in the White House. Jones Act? He won’t care much one way or another about you and me if he thinks he’s getting a “good deal”. The man made all his tacky suits and ties in Mexico!!!

Considering the fact that he would like to put the working American back to work( whether it’s truthful or not, we shall see) I Doubt it, but if he tried, the people surely wouldn’t let it happen.

The New republican party of Donald Trump proctects the right and privileges of the american people. For the 1st time since a while the President of the United States is not a sold-out to the Globalists and foreigner.
It’s a new page in the history.

If the Jones Act was to be repealed / changed? and you could be involved with the writing of any new law how would you like to see it be written?

it’s both the democrats and the republican who have sold out the country and the jobs.
The biggest scam in the history was NAFTA signed by the Clintons and the Trans pacific partnetship signed by O Bummer, the U.S is the laughing stock of the world because politician
like Kaschish, Bush and Clintions have sold out the country.

There’s a lot of Butthurt in this thread from the Hillary supporters.

something else which bears noting is that no outright repeal of the Jones Act is even necessary. The issuance of waivers if purely an Administration issue and almost all statutes give the President the power to issue them upon only his determination they are best for the Nation and no one else’s! when enough maritime corporations come to call with the list of favors to ask for, there will be NO ONE IN THE LAND who can stop him handing them out especially when the Congress is 100% Republican controlled and the courts packed with Federal judges who will be more then happy to interpret the President’s reasons for granting the waivers valid and justifiable. The deck is now stacked purely in the favor of big business and you are a fool to believe they are not going to come calling once our glorious new leader sets up shop to make America GREAT again!

mark my words here and now, Trump in no way whatsoever will honor all he has said he will go to protect the US worker. in fact, I fully expect him to do more harm to American workers than any President in US history. he is a shyster and he bought his election from 1/2 the American population using a check which is sure to bounce the moment the people try to take it to the bank. You all are bigger RUBES than you can ever imagine! You’ve been had by a world class CONARTIST and soon enough you’ll be finding out how much he took y’all for!

and speaking of the penultimate RUBE himself!

LOL that’s hilarious. Yup everyone gets a job in the new golden age of Trump! Take your pick: coal mine or McDonalds? Would you rather be a restroom attendant at one of his cheesy golf courses? I’d like to believe that he’s going to deliver on his outrageous campaign promises, but it’s impossible.

The last guy was a hand maiden to big banks and business before he was officially elected…

The new lady was gonna be more of the same…

Besides if the Jones Act is repealed it opens the door to waive the citizen requirement on all modes of transport, something the American public won’t like and an obvious 180 from his platform.
There is tremendous pressure to eliminate airline cabotage in the U.S. No one is going to get upset if and when Trump does away with that as part of the Jones Act repeal.

The same American redneck morons who elected him will jump with joy when they can save $50 on their next flight to Disney World.

What makes you think he looks at the “average American” any differently than he does any piece of tail that comes into his view? If you are not a 10 in his eyes you are nothing.
