If I test for 500 ton oceans mate, will I have to retest to upgrade to 3rd mate unlimited? Is the test for 500 ton oceans mate the same as for 3rd mate? Thanks in advance.
In my experience, Limited to Unlimited means the NMC will have you re-test.
You don’t have to retest, look it up.
It is the same test and you will not have to take it again.
I know two guys that upgraded from 1,600 ton masters to Third mate unlimited and they had to re-test.
1600 ton master is not the same test as third mate agt. If those people never took the 1600 ton mate test or took it after 2002 then they needed to retest.
I thought it was if you never took the 1600 ton
Oops! 1600 ton mate test or if it was taken before 2002.?
The 500\1600 ton mate test was made the same as 3m/2m in 2002. If you took the 1600 ton mate test in or after 2002 you do not need to retest for 3m. The same does not apply for 1600 ton master though so the people that went master-to-master and skipped 500/1600 mate need to test for 3m.
Gotcha! Thanks Cap
if you do not take the oceans 500 ton mate does this mean your third mate would be near coastal? If so how would you go about adding oceans to it?

Take and pass the Celestial module for the 500 ton/3rd mate.
When you apply for 3m oceans you will be told to test for celestial and probably retake nav gen as there is a slight difference in that one nc to oceans (I’m pretty sure it is nav gen). And rules of the road if it has been over a year since you took rules.

You’re correct, there is a small difference between near coastal nav. general and oceans nav. general (weather and voyage planning). There’s a small (10 questions, I think) nav. general module for n/c to oceans
