1600 ton mate to 3rd mate

Hello all…I tested for my 1600 ton mate after 2/1/2002 and I have just started my 3rd mate assessments, I read today here on the forum that to get my 3rd I just need to test on rules of the road…has anybody done this?

?Is that taking the rules test and the assessments or just the rules? Thank you for any help on this

May be wrong but I think you will need more schools now. Not for sure if the latest change requires it now or not. Pretty sure you will be testing more than ROR though.

They are the same exams 500-3rd after whatever date…after that date you should be all set. Exception would be inland/nc/oceans if you are changing route.

This seems correct from a old post.

The post from Mr.Cavo on that link is where I came up with maybe only having to take the rules, thats the 1st time I’ve ever heard of that and I have read policy letters several times

If you tested for MATE 1600 (not Master) after 2/1/02 you should not need additional tests for 3rd Mate.

If you already have an STCW endorsement for OICNW valid for vessels of 500 GT or more, you should not need to do assessments for 3rd Mate, Mate 500 GRT, Mate 1600 GRT, 3rd Mate, and 2nd Mate all get the same STCW endorsements (subject to tonnage limits on your Mate license) and have to meet the same assessment and course requirements. So if you already have STCW OICNW for 500 GT or more, you have already met the STCW requirements.

You will need to take a flashing light course.

Only if all of your sea time to get the endorsement is from after March 24, 2014, or if you apply after December 31, 2016. If you have at least one day of qualifying sea service before March 24, 2014, and you apply before January 1, 2017, you are grandfathered and can qualify under the old regulations. See the Grandfathering NVIC (NVIC 02-14) at http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/announcements/pdfs/nvic-02-14_Grandfathering_final_with_encls_20140122.pdf

We should sticky some of this stuff, kind of like gcaptain’s own unoficial NVIC’s for common license issues.
