Why so many Chief Mates quitting MSC?

Exactly, who would that someone be? I awaited this person for 30 years, sadly they never showed.

too much money? maybe the players will smarten up finally or leave. big maybe tho.
there was a question asked of the Admiral about MSC furloughs. it will be for all government employees not just MSC was his answer.
Not all government ewmployees, but maybe all of DoD. We got an e-mail from DHS today, it included “We may also have to consider placing employees on temporary furlough…” Right now, no furloughs for USCG and DHS.

Check out the book “Merchant Marine For Dummies” as it is a must read for all us former MSC clowns. There is a thing called the internet and put as many resumes out til you are released from hell, oh, I mean MSC.

MSC pays my car insurance.
MSC pays my car insurance.
Oh my goodness - That is so funny - Thanks UnRepKing
All of us find work because we need it, for many reasons, yes, one is to pay for our car insurance, plus a few cold ones too.

Maybe it’s just me but with all of this talk about lay offs but every time I log on the Add Banner at the top is advertising for MSC, ironic isn’t?

Good one. A car is one of the three things you don’t need when sailing with msc. The other two, is a boat and a wife.

You may be confusing reality with advertisement dollars already spent…

Got a call from a recruiter yesterday. Said base Chief Mate pay $74k and with overtime, it would be double. So about $140k. Work 4 months and off 1 month. So basically working 270-300 days a year for $140k…

You get Super High Intensity Training too from MSC. MSC gives their employees more S.H.I.T. than any other company out there.

Not in my years with MSC - we all need work.

That aint right… For Chief mate:
Base (say ashore) 92,818 OT 52.19
Salvage or Tug 72,512 OT 52.19
Unrep vessels 112,748 OT 65.46
Sub Tender 119,586 OT 67.23
Hospital Ship 133,906 OT 75.29

Read all about it: http://www.msc.navy.mil/civmar/payroll.htm

“double it with overtime” is a MSC cliche along with “at least you got your on room” and “More Shit Coming”

You never see those rates, those are posted as per the class of vessel, as per union rules. But, Msc employees won’t get those rates. For years I would se my yearly " advertised" rate, then see my pay check and wonder wtf until I asked. Add to that you will see the Pay cap when too much OT is made… Nope, don’t believe all you read on a web sight, especially one from Msc.

Whatever. I received the exact rate of wage and OT advertised.

Nothing sneaky with those pay scales. That is exactly what my base and ot rate are.

It’s still not that great. More is to be made without having to spend 8+ months a year at sea. I’ve met many younger guys in the last ten years who work 28/28. Every 28 days they go mountain climbing, skiing, fishing, hunting wherever in the world they feel like going. With the advent of social media the MSC guys see their friends posting pictures of a new adventure every month. Then they sit back and remember they have 4 more months left to “earn” a couple of months off. It’s kinda hard to keep smart people around when their friends are doing better than they are.

I know one C/M and one Cheng who still work for MSC. According to the C/M I know he pulls down almost 200 a year. However he works 10 months a year. We even seen a post in this thread that says about 20k a month. But I will say it again. Month for month that is pretty low for a C/M. Nothing against people who work there and want to work there. If a person can handle that time on VS time off, more power to them. I have a wife and two boys and they have a hard enough time getting use to me after being gone for 60 days at a time. I cant imagine 10 months.
